HIV/AIDS
HIV/AIDS
• HIV – human immunodeficiency virus
-the virus causes HIV infection and AIDS
-AIDS refers to a set of symptoms and illnesses that occur at
a very final stage of HIV infection when the CD-4 count drops
below 200.(normal 500-1500)
This occurs after the virus attacks and destroys the T-helper cells
of the immune system

The origin of
of AIDS
AIDS pandemic
pandemic
• The world first became aware of AIDS in the early
1980’s in US (CDC) among homosexuals.
• The condition robbed young ,healthy people of their
strong immune system ,leaving them weak and
vulnerable and it seems to come out of nowhere.

 different theories have been developed:--

-ORAL POLIO VACCINE(OPV) THEORY
-HUNTERS THEORY
The oral polio vaccine(OPV) theory

• Proposed by Edward Hooper in his book “The rivers”

• Live polio vaccine needs to be cultivated in living tissue,
and initially it was grown in kidney cells taken from local
chimps infected with Simian immunodeficiency
virus(SIVcpz)
• The vaccine was tested to about 1million people in DRC,
Rwanda and Burundi in late 1950s, where SIVcpz mutated
to HIV
• The theory was disproved when samples of original polio
vaccine were analyzed and no traces of either HIV or SIV
were found.

THE PROBLEM STATEMENT
• 70% of all new HIV infections take place in
Africa(UNAID 2016), the poor countries are
the most hit.
• AIDS causes illness, disabilities and death to
workers and severe economic and emotional
disruptions.
• Ability of HIV to adapt and mutate rapidly
developing drug resistance.

WHO GOALS
WHO work is particularly relevant to achieving the following
2015 global targets and commitments:(millennium SDG goal 6)
• Reaching 15 million people with life-saving ART.
• Eliminating new HIV infections; children and reducing AIDS-
related maternal deaths.
• Reducing tuberculosis deaths in people living with HIV by
50%.
• Reducing sexual transmission of HIV by 50%.
• Reducing transmission of HIV ; inject drugs by 50%.
• strengthen integration of the AIDS response in global health
and development efforts.
NATIONAL AIDS CONTROL PROGRAMME

THE HIV/AIDS
HIV/AIDSPANDEMIC
PANDEMIC
Educational processes aimed at teaching people
about HIV/AIDS; directed at mutual relationship
(love sex and trust).
Improving quality of life, poverty being the main
reason of the HIV spread in Africa.
Investing more in medical researches aimed at
coming out with AIDS cure and more advanced ARV
drug.
Facilitate self test of HIV while providing education
on how to live safely in case a person is infected.
