Beauty, Aesthetics and Arts

Aesthetics is artistic philosophy that aims at :

 Understanding the nature and meaning of

beauty.

 While Aesthetics may be the theory of beauty

it also is the philosophy of art.

 Beauty, thus includes the sublime as well as

the superficial while pure aesthetic concepts
are concentrated on the philosophy of art,
with careful analysis of different aspects of art
like the value of aesthetic experience and the
variety of aesthetic attitudes and presence of
intention.

 Beauty and aesthetics both define in a way

that both describe about the appearance of
something.

the men will often roll their eyes and
show their teeth to emphasize these
characteristics.

Mauritania

What would be considered overweight in the Western

Culture would be considered attractive in Mauritania.
Mauritanian culture for
beauty encourages
consumption of high
fat foods such as
camel's milk, to
ensure that young
women attain
sufficient size.

Obesity is so revered among Mauritania's white Moor

Arab population that the young girls are sometimes
force-fed to obtain a weight the government has
described as "life-threatening".
Androgyny is a term derived from Greek words
meaning man and woman.
In fashion statements, androgyny can refer to the
mixing of masculine and feminine characteristics.
Body Art is art made on, with, or consisting of, the
human body.
The most common forms of body art are tattoos and body
piercings, but other types include scarification branding,
shaping, full body tattoo and body painting.
Cultural Ethnocentrism
We tend to regard our
own culture’s customs
as highly “civilized” ,
more beautiful; and
others’ as “savage”.
Technological innovations
that inundate society with
images of beautiful people
are a cultural change that
has helped to narrow the
criteria for evaluating
appearance

Few can compare

themselves favorably to the
beautiful people in the
media, whose images are
increasingly artificially
enhanced.

Fashion dolls, like Barbie,

are an icon of female
beauty for young girls to
adopt.
Mass culture and the media have served to project the body
ideal and turn gentle concern about appearance into
obsessions. Beauty can become very unnatural. People will go
lengths to live up to the beauty ideals of their society: eating
disorders, cosmetic surgery, hair implants, etc.
When powerful cultural ideologies and institutions
change, body standards and customs change.

This is clearly
evident in the
changing
standards for
feminine and
masculine
beauty over the
last two
centuries in the
Western world.
Males or Females.
Beauty varies from person to person. It is
relative. Males or females are beautiful from
their physical appearance when they exhibit
good looking features superior to their race
which in return determine their facial features
(e.g. the Indo-Malay race is classified with their
semi dark, yellow-brownish skin and big eyes.)
For example, long legs, slim, fair skin, long hair
and sexy lips (Women) and Six pack abs,
masculine looks, wealth and intelligence (Men) .
Although this classification may be relative or
vary from person to person. It is all about taste.
Beautiful according to us.
FOOD
are classified beautiful when they exhibit the
features of the cuisines which then influence
the variety of ingredients used. It is all about
the presentation and cultural conditioning in
the end. E.g. decorated desserts, cupcakes
and well decorated tumpeng. Is it decorated
well without looking too much? In addition,
would people crave for the food just by
looking at it? The popular Filipino balut or
roasted croc, for example?
Movies are beautiful when the story and the
plot are interesting, the characters are really much
into the characters they are playing. Also, when the
settings, music and costume of the actors suit the
story.
Songs are beautiful when the singers can really
sing and when they really understand the rhythm, like
when do they have to start singing and when to stop.
Songs are beautiful when the lyrics suit the rhyme, like
for example sad song should be sung in mellow not in
rock n’ roll. Another thing is that when the song is nicely
arranged and played by the background music or the
instrumentals.
Examples
 The Chainsmokers - Don’t Let Me Down
 John Williams - Star Wars’ Imperial March
 Ed Sheeran - Shape Of You
 Moonlight Sonata - Ludwig van Beethoven
 Bohemian Rhapsody - Queen
 Miley Cyrus - Malibu
Perfumes are beautiful when :
 The smell is good and the design of the
package is attractive and suits the
wearer or user of the perfume.

Example : Happy/Heart by Clinique and

Chanel No. 5 by Coco Chanel
Clothing are beautiful when the clothes fit
the body of the wearer perfectly and the color
also suits their personality. Clothes are also
beautiful when the wearer feels comfortable
wearing it.

Comfort vs. Style

Relationships
Relationships are beautiful
when :
 Two different people are
together and can complete
each other. They accept
each other the way they are.
They trust each other and
they forgive each other. They
communicate a. When they
face a conflict, they will work
together to find a way out.
 Communication. The KEY to
any relationship!
• Stability as experienced either through length relationship or had survived
problems; preferably a long lasting relationship without major problems
• Relationships are beautiful when it ends happily
• Relationships are categorized as beautiful when all involved are participating
and have fully commitment in having the relationships work
• Relationships are beautiful when a person can always maintain good
atmosphere and show respects with each other.
• Relationships are beautiful when all participating members fulfill the
relationship completely
• A relationship is beautiful when the individuals involved complete ach other.
And are willing to ‘study’ and understand the ‘other ‘
• Relationships are at its best when they grow and mature together
• BUT, do you agree with the saying – the best relationships are based on
lies and deceptions?
To maintain Relationships, be tactful…

What you really want to say What is Politically Correct

No way! I am not sure that’s possible

You’re an idiot, an imbecile even! You’re intellectually Disadvantaged

I wasn’t involved in that problem /

someone much better!
Sceneries are beautiful when it
pictures nature and its surroundings. The
view shows how everything are formed
naturally without too much works of human
in it. Beautiful scenery exhibits the natural
form of nature (e.g. mountains are
mountains, not mountains of garbage or
deforested forests).

Waterfalls, Croatia

Aesthetics and Art
Aesthetics and Art are related
closely….if we want to purchase
a new car, we would think of its
about the physical properties
despite the fact that basic car
functions are the same - we
would choose the one that
pleases our aesthetic sense.

E.g.: color, shape, and design.

Another example are paintings.

When we want to buy a painting,
we the same aesthetic sense is
applied to select the one that we
perceive as beautiful.
Art in any form makes use of the
following things:
