Abstract:
● Adequate coverage is very important for sensor networks to fulfill the issued
tasks.
● In this paper , we study the problem of placing mobile sensors to get high
coverage.
○ Based on voronoi diagrams.
● We design two sets of distributed protocols for controlling the movement of
sensors.
○ One favouring communication
○ Other favouring movement
● In each set of protocols,we use voronoi diagrams to detect coverage holes.

Introduction
● Wireless sensor networks
○ Wsn’s can greatly enhance our capability to monitor and control the physical environment
○ Traditional methods are invented for data collection and bridging the gap between physical
world and virtual world
● Some issues of sensor deployment
○ In many working environments such as harsh fields ,disaster areas ,urban regions, sensors
deployment cannot be performed manually.
○ To scatter sensors by aircraft is on possible, but actual landing position cannot be controlled
because of obstacles.
○ So the coverage may be inferior to the application requirements
■ In this scenarios ,it is necessary to make use of mobile sensors, which can move to the
correct places to provide the required coverage
Introduction cont..
We propose two sets of distributed protocols for controlling the movement of
sensors to achieve target coverage.
● BASIC PROTOCOLS
● VIRTUAL MOVEMENT PROTOCOLS
In the basic protocols ,sensors move iteratively and detect the coverage holes
using voronoi diagram.
1. VEC(VECtor-based)
2. VOR(VORonoi-based)
3. MINIMAX
Location awareness is important for wireless sensor networks since many applications such as
environment monitoring and target tracking depend on knowing the locations of sensor nodes.
Path planning:
We assume that mobile sensors can move to any location where they are asked to move based on
the existing techniques.
Sensing model:
○ Each type of sensors has its unique sensing models, characterized by its sensing area
resolution,accuracy.
○ We consider isotropic sensing model.
Voronoi diagram
● It represents the proximity information about a set geometrics nodes.
● voronoi diagram is a collection nodes partition as a polygons.
Diagram represents:
VEC moves at low sensor density and best deployment when coverage is not
high.
