Problem 22.8 Foust
(Navarrete, Lorenzo)
A mixture of galena and silica is to be
elutriated by a carbon tetrachloride
stream flowing at a velocity of 0.1
m/s and a temperature of 25°C. The
solid feed analyses 30 weight percent
galena, and a screen analysis is
indicated in the following table.
Elutriation
Elutriation is a process for separating particles
based on their size, shape and density, using a
stream of gas or liquid flowing in a direction
usually opposite to the direction of
sedimentation. This method is mainly used for
particles smaller than 1 μm. The smaller or
lighter particles rise to the top (overflow)
because their terminal sedimentation velocities
are lower than the velocity of the rising fluid.

Problem 22.9 Foust
(Narciso, Rivera, Simbulan)
A gravity settling tank is to be used to clean
wastewater from an oil refinery. The waste stream
contains 1% oil by volume (s.p of oil=0.87) as small
drops ranging in size between 10 and 500 microns.
The tank is rectangular and measures 3m wide and
2m deep. Provision is made at the discharge end for
the clean water to be continuously removed from
the bottom of the tank. Periodic skimming of the
liquid surface at the discharge end removes the
accumulated oil. If 6.3 m3/s of wastewater is to be
processed, how long must the settling tank be?
Gravity Settling Tanks
Also referred as ‘SEDIMENTATION TANKS’.

Settling- process by which particulates settle to

the bottom of a liquid and form a sediment.

Gravity settling- the particles will tend to fall to

the bottom of the vessel, forming a slurry at the
vessel base.
