How do fires happen?

There are three factors that cause a fire to occur:

1. Oxygen source – breathable air …

2. Fuel source – something that will burn.

Types may include:

• Dry combustibles – paper, wood, and plastics

• Flammable liquids – grease, oil, paint

3. Ignition mechanism – a device, item, or

occurrence able to cause the material to light on fire.
Fire Extinguishers
Fire Extinguishers

• Fire extinguishers are classified

according the type of fire they
are effective against.
• The type of fuel that a fire is
composed of determines its
classification.
Fire Extinguishers

• Class A fires are composed of dry

combustibles like paper, wood, and
plastics.

• Class A extinguishers contain water to

remove the heat from the fire.

• Class A fires form embers that

continue to smolder in the fire if is not
totally extinguished. The burned
material must be moved away from the
building after the fire is extinguished.
Fire Extinguishers

• Class B fires are usually fueled by

grease, oil, paint, or flammable liquids.

• Class B extinguishers contain dry

chemicals, carbon dioxide, or other
agents.

• Dry chemical shoots out a powdery

cloud that smothers fire. Carbon dioxide
eliminates the oxygen element of the fire.
Fire Extinguishers

• Class C fires are electrical. An

extinguisher is rated for class C
fires if it contains an agent that is
nonconductive.

• Class D extinguishers are used on

exotic metals such as magnesium,
sodium, and potassium. No other
fire extinguisher is effective against
these combustible metal fires.
Fire Extinguishers
• Using an extinguisher that is not
properly rated for the fire could
actually spread the fire and make it
worse!

• Extinguishers with multiple

classifications like the ABC
extinguisher eliminate your chances
of choosing the wrong extinguisher
because they are effective for Class
A, B, and C fires, as well as fires that
have more than one fuel involved.
This is the kind of extinguisher
that we have at CSS.
Fire Extinguishers
There will also be a number or numbers on the extinguisher label:
Fire Extinguishers

When using a fire

extinguisher, remember
the acronym P.A.S.S.
Fire Extinguishers

• Remember that fire extinguishers have a limited range

and limited amount of extinguishing agent. They are
effective against small fires, but should not be used
in any of the following situations:

– You have not been properly trained to use the fire

extinguisher.
– The fire spreads beyond its immediate area.
– The fire could block your escape route.

What to Do in Case of Fire
What to Do in Case of Fire

In almost all serious fire scenarios, you

will not be able to use a fire extinguisher
to eliminate the fire threat.

Follow these steps instead to be as safe

as possible!
What to Do in Case of Fire
Clear your office or room location

• Lock your computer by clicking the Windows

key and L at the same time. This is a security
measure – a fire may be related to an attempt to
access secure information.
What to Do in Case of Fire

• If no fire is visible, carefully leave your

office or room location and proceed to
the nearest exit. Any exit will do.
Fire exits only exist to trigger an alarm.

• If fire is visible, exit in the opposite

direction by using the alternate exit
route.
What to Do in Case of Fire

No matter what,
stay low to avoid
smoke and heat.
Poison gasses
rise to the top of
fires.
What to Do in Case of Fire

Do NOT take the elevator!

• Total power failure is likely, shutting the elevator down.
• Fire on a specific floor can short-circuit the elevator call
button, causing the elevator to stop at that floor.
• An elevator shaft provides a natural chimney for smoke
and flames to rise.
• If you need assistance with stairs, it will be provided by
your department’s fire warden (designated staff
member w/ additional safety training & responsibilities)
What to Do in Case of Fire
If you do not hear a fire alarm and are safely passing one on your exit route,
pull it – do not go out of your way or otherwise jeopardize your safety.

If you have to open a door

and cannot see what’s on the
other side, feel it for warmth
with the back of your hand
and look for smoke seeping
in around the edges. If it
seems safe, open the door
slowly and be prepared to
slam it shut if heat or smoke
rush in.
What to Do in Case of Fire

Proceed to your center’s meeting spot and report

to your department’s fire warden (designated staff
member responsible for dept. head count and
additional responsibilities).

At both CSS locations, the meeting spot is at the

far end of the parking lot, straight back from the
front door.
Staff at Goodwill, STC, or MTC locations will follow
exit policy for those buildings.
