CHAPTER I:
INTRODUCTION AND ITS BACKGROUND

INTRODUCTION

Harmful impacts of fossil fuels such as global warming, greenhouse gases

emissions, and fast depletion have caused in a bigger attention in the studies
regarding alternate power or sustainable energy such as biofuels. One of the biofuels,
bioethanol, has been regarded as better choice than conventional fuels.
CHAPTER I:
INTRODUCTION AND ITS BACKGROUND

OBJECTIVES OF THE DESIGN

General Objective
The general objective of this study is to develop a complete design of
a Bioethanol manufacturing plant that will utilize microalgae as the
feedstock.

Specific Objectives
1. To determine and evaluate the feasibility of the technical aspects of the
proposed plant.
2. To assess the feasibility of the manufacturing process integrated in the
project.
3. To determine and evaluate the financial aspects and the socio-economic
impacts of producing bioethanol from waste raw materials.
4. To access the market feasibility and come up with an efficient and
effective marketing strategy.
CHAPTER I:
INTRODUCTION AND ITS BACKGROUND

BACKGROUND OF THE STUDY

Separate Hydrolysis and Fermentation (SHF)

- Production is carried out in this process because both
hydrolysis and fermentation can be operated separately with their
own optimum conditions

Pretreatment Hydrolysis Fermentation Distillation

CHAPTER I:
INTRODUCTION AND ITS BACKGROUND
LIMITATIONS OF THE STUDY
• Production Level
The plant will be utilizing 83.4819 tons of microalgae per day
producing approximately 5045.0878 tons of bioethanol per year. The plant
will be operating 24 hours per day, 7 days per week and a total of 330 days
per year.
• Plant Location
The plant will be situated at Calamba, Bukal Los Banos, Laguna
located in CALABARZON.
1. Raw Material Availability
2. Energy and Water Availability
3. Land Adequacy
4. Transportation Facilities
5. Labor Site and Site Topography
• Years of Projection, Captured Market and Marketability
The plant is projected to operate from November 2021 for a period of
25 years after the construction of the plant.
CHAPTER I:
INTRODUCTION AND ITS BACKGROUND

TECHNICAL LIMITATIONS AND CAPABILITY

The proposed plant design will be utilizing microalgae as the raw

materials for production of bioethanol.
Primary objective of the proposed plant is to manufacture bioethanol
through separate hydrolysis and fermentation process in which
carbohydrate is converted to glucose prior to fermentation and then
distillation to produce pure ethanol.

– Financial Limitations
CHAPTER I:
INTRODUCTION AND ITS BACKGROUND

SIGNIFICANCE OF THE STUDY

– The bioethanol manufacturing plant will be beneficial on the Philippine

economy through growth in the exportation and minimize importation of
the country.
– As an alternative transportation fuel, this will lessen the dependence on
crude oil thus minimizing greenhouse gases emissions that cause
global warming.
– it will contribute to the demand and supply wherein the supply will
increase to suffice the demand, while increasing the demand for the
alternative source of bioethanol.

CONCEPTUAL BACKGROUND

PRODUCT

•Bioethanol
Bioethanol is exceptionally attractive as a substitute fuel.
The need for alternative fuels comes from the diminution of simple to
admission reserves of coal, gas and crude oil within the following
years.
The main advantage of bioethanol over petroleum based
fuels are its renewability and its supposed carbon neutrality
(Robson, 2007).
