Current trends of RE application in Ethiopia

 Most abundant and commonly applied RE resources in

Ethiopia are:
 Hydropower = 45,000MW generating capacity
 Solar energy = expected to be in the highest category of the world.
 Wind energy = 10,000MW generating capacity
 Biomass = common fuel in the 85% of the pop
 Geothermal energy = 5,000MW generating capacity

Hydropower in Ethiopia

 Hydropower:
 It is estimated that Ethiopia's hydropower potential with up
to 45,000 MW is the 2nd highest in Africa (only DR
Congo has a higher potential).
 Approximately 30,000 MW are estimated to be
economically feasible which is equivalent to an electricity
generation of 162 TWh.

 Ethiopia has good wind resources with
velocities ranging from 7 to 9 m/s.
 Its wind energy potential is estimated to be
10,000 MW.
 Areas with high wind velocities of up to 10
m/s are distributed throughout the Eastern
half of the country, including the western
escarpment of the Rift Valley.

 Wind Energy in Ethiopia

As per the available studies

1. Nazreth with 9.3m/s
2. Ashegoda with 8.5m/s and
3. Harena with 6.9m/s

has the best wind energy potential

The other sites

1. Debrebirhan (more than 300MW)
2. Aysha (Afar) (max of 1000MW)

are believed to have higher wind

energy potential

Solar Power
9

 The strength of the solar radiation in Ethiopia is

expected to be in the highest category of the world.
 Ethiopia receives a solar irradiation of 5000 – 7000 kWh/m²
according to region and season and thus has great potential for
the use of solar energy.
 An assessment study indicated in 2002, that the average daily
solar radiation reaching the ground for Ethiopia as a whole is 5.2
kWh/m2.
 The values vary seasonally, from 4.55-5.55 kWh/m2/day.

Geothermal Energy in Ethiopia

 Geologically, Ethiopia has a great potential for the energetic

use of heat from the underground. This is mainly due to the great
African Rift Valley, which runs through the country.
 Geothermal Prospecting Areas in the Ethiopian Rift Valley and Afar
Depression
 The estimated potential of the geothermal resource in the whole
Ethiopian Rift is about ~5000 MWe.:
 Installed geothermal generating capacity (December 2009) is that of
Aluto-Langano
 Installed capacity is 7.3MW
 Generating capacity is 3.0MW after several operational problem
 Not working right now??!!

WHY TO CONSERVE IT ?

We have limited resources available on earth.

 Our demands are continuously increasing day
by day.
 It is possible that someday most of the non-
renewable resources will be exhausted and we
will have to switch over to alternate energy
We save our money when
we save energy.

We reduce pollution when

we save energy.

We save our energy when

we save energy.
