5 Minds For The Future

Howard Gardner has put forward five types of
minds or mental abilities that must be mastered
by an individual.

Howard Gardner concerns himself with the

kinds of minds that people will need if we are to
thrive in the world during the eras to come.

The 5 Minds for the Future identified by

Gardner refer to 5 characteristics of the mind
that Gardner suggests each person should aim to
develop.
Howard Gardner stated that the future is so unpredictable
and changing, everyone needs to cultivate five different ways
of thinking.
1. The disciplined mind
2. The synthesizing mind
3. The creating mind
4. The respectful mind
5. The ethical mind

Howard Gardner thinks of them as broad uses of the mind

that can be cultivated in schools, the workplace or in
professions.

Ryan, Cooper & Bolick, 2016

The Disciplined Mind

The Synthesizing Mind

The Creating Mind

The Respectful Mind

The Ethical Mind

Disciplined Mind
One must master at least one discipline or framework of
thought to solve the problem in all things.

Disciplined mind also means someone should always train

such thinking to improve his performance.

The way of thinking itself cannot be obtained in a short

time.

Along with the increase and addition of a person's field of

expertise, then the solution of any problem can be more
focused and easier to apply.

Disciplined mind is based on the right frame of thinking

and trained expertise.
It is about learning to think like experts and master in
any topic.
The important aspect in this mind is becoming an

expert in a particular field.

Tiwari & Nafees, 2015
4 Step to Develop Disciplined Mind
Identify important topics / concepts in a subject that is
important content or skills in learning.

Allow some time to learn the topic and learn it in depth.

Teachers use different approaches to teach so students

can learn with various methods that are felt easier to
understand.

Form a valuation method. This will provide you with

in-depth evidence & understanding & give you an
opportunity for formative evaluation. It also gives
students the opportunity to apply skills & knowledge in
other contexts.
Respectful Mind
Respectful mind: the awareness of and
appreciation for differences among human
beings and human groups.

(Adrian Lim, Steven Wong, Lim Bock Boon, Alvin Tan, Vincent Lee, Sharizah Mohamed Amin,
2009)
We can try to understand better, make common cause
with, and give the benefit of the doubt to other people.

This process begins with birth. It is how the father, mother

or caretaker treats the child; how parents treat one another,
how siblings treat one another, etc.

(Howard Gardner, 2008)

The respectful mind =

notes, welcomes and responds seeks to understand

sympathetically and different cultures and
constructively to differences to work effectively
between people and cultures with them
Classroom Application of
Respectful Mind
Teachers modelling respectful behaviour.
Exposing students to materials from other
cultures, primarily through history, the arts and
the humanities (literature).
Creating Mind
The capacity to uncover and clarify new
problems, questions, and phenomena.

People who are creative are those who come up with new
things which eventually get accepted.
(Howard Gardner, 2008)
Creating mind puts forward =
Poses Suggest Generate

questions of thinking answers

Creativity is essential as it allows us to keep one step ahead of

computers and robots.

People who are judged creative =

risks falling down
up this?

Creativity = thinking outside the box.

Classroom Application of Creating
Mind
Young children are natural creators the task
of the teacher is to nurture this natural
creativity.
Teachers suggesting alternative ways to solve
maths problems or interpret texts.
Synthesizing Mind
The synthesizing mind takes information from
disparate sources, understands and evaluates
that information objectively and puts it together
in ways that make sense to the synthesizer and
also to other persons.
The emphasis in the mind
of synthesis:
Someone who They also must They also should

Students have a tendency to compromise

Teachers can be role models for

developing the ethical mind.
