CURTAIN WALL
A curtain wall system is an outer covering of a building in
which the outer walls are non-structural, but merely keep
the weather out and the occupants in. As the curtain wall is
non-structural it can be made of a lightweight material,
reducing construction costs. When glass is used as the
curtain wall, a great advantage is that natural light can
penetrate deeper within the building. The curtain
wall faade does not carry any dead load weight from the
building other than its own dead load weight. The wall
transfers horizontal wind loads that are incident upon it to
the main building structure through connections at floors or
columns of the building. A curtain wall is designed to resist
air and water infiltration, sway induced by wind
and seismic forces acting on the building, and its own dead
load weight forces.

Stick systems

The vast majority of curtain

walls are installed long pieces
(referred to as sticks) between
floors vertically and between
vertical members horizontally.
Framing members may be
fabricated in a shop, but all
installation and glazing is
typically performed at the
jobsite.
Unitized systems

Unitized curtain walls entail factory fabrication and assembly

of panels and may include factory glazing. These completed
units are hung on the building structure to form the building
enclosure. Unitized curtain wall has the advantages of: speed;
lower field installation costs
Lower field installation
costs; and quality control
within an interior
climate controlled
environment. The
economic benefits are
typically realized on
large projects or in areas
of high field labour
rates.
Rain Screen
A common feature in curtain wall
technology, the rain
screen principle theorizes that
equilibrium of air pressure
between the outside and inside of
the "rain screen" prevents water
penetration into the building itself.
For example, the glass is captured
between an inner and an outer
gasket in a space called the glazing
rebate.
The glazing rebate is ventilated to the exterior so that the
pressure on the inner and outer sides of the exterior gasket
is the same. When the pressure is equal across this gasket
water cannot be drawn through joints or defects in the
gasket.

Quay Grand Circular Quay
This building has been constructed in 1999 in Australia.
The architectural project group is PTW Architects. The
function of the building is residential and commercial.
Steel, cable, glass and reinforced concrete are the main
structural materials of this building. Many of these
spaces are enclosed by operable glass screens, which can
be opened in suitable weather, providing strong visual
and physical links with the surroundings. The upper
level penthouses enjoy panoramic views

This building consists of cables, glass and tubes. It is the

simplest system. Cables are connected with the tubes
which makes cable trusses.

Edmonton Clinic South Edmonton
This building has been constructed in 2012 in Canada. The
architectural project group is Dialog Architects. The function of the
building is healthy. Steel, cable, glass, metal, stone and reinforced
concrete are the main structural materials of this building.
One of the design challenges was to create an interactive learning
environment in a building that runs the length of two football fields.
The color-coded floors and clear organization help users navigate
the space. A northsouth building main street filled with natural
light links to walkways, plazas, cascading stairs, elevator banks and
exit stairs. Edmontons harsh climate demanded a highperformance
envelope and aggressive energy recovery systems. High-
performance glass, diffusing films, brise soleils and reflectors help
control the natural light. A green roof and the use of native
vegetation reduce storm water runoff and minimize irrigation needs.

Instead of truss, there are cables which are connected to the

main building structure.

STRUCTURAL GLAZING

Structural glazing systems, in their simplest form, are types

of curtain wall systems consisting of glass that is bonded or
anchored back to a structure without the use of continuously
gasketed aluminium pressure plates or caps. The glass can be
comprised of monolithic, laminated, dual-glazed or even
triple-glazed insulating glass units (IGUs). The back-up
structure may use horizontal and/or vertical aluminium
mullions or be a glass mullion, steel blade, cable or stainless
steel rod. The interior and exterior may use extruded
silicone/EPDM gaskets, or a wet sealed silicone depending
on the system. This system creates a completely clean, flush
exterior appearance while the interior members have many
different options depending on design and budget.

The reaction load

CABLE STAYED GLAZING

Cable supported glazing

systems like fin support system
are also increasingly used.
Cable system creates greater
levels of openings,
visibility and natural lights and
enhance the dramatic appearance
of the building.
SPIDER WEB SYSTEM

Spider system is a system for point supported vertical

glazing in which thermally toughened glass sheets are
used, in single glazing or in insulated glass.
This system is suitable for new building and is
especially effected for the refurbishment of old
buildings.
