INTEGRATING THE

LITERACY BLOCK IN
SOCIAL STUDIES
LITERACY INTEGRATION IS POSSIBLE!!
I DONT HAVE TIME TO TEACH SOCIAL STUDIES!

Yes you do! Integrate the Literacy Block into your Social Studies lesson.
1.Word Work: Introduce vocabulary for the unit.
2.Read Aloud: Introduce the lesson with a book or literature piece.
3.Guided Reading: Using anchor charts, Thinking Maps, and Kagan Strategies.
4.Mini Lesson: Teach the objective.
5.Workstations: Use products from Guided Reading and mini-lesson to extend independent
practice.
6.Writing Workshop: Students will reflect on lesson through various writing activities.
1. WORD WORK:VOCABULARY

Frayer models, Kagan strategies, and Thinking Maps should be used to introduce, practice
and assess understanding of vocabulary meaning.
2. READ ALOUD: THE LITERATURE LIST USES BOOKS
FROM LEVELED READERS
Lesson should begin with a focus. Leveled Readers are one option you can use.

Not necessarily. Writing can be expressed in many ways. Choose an option from the
