Network Architecture
Characteristic for UMTS
3G or 3rd generation mobile telecommunications, fulfilling the International Mobile
Telecommunications-2000 (IMT 2000) specifications.
For Indonesia, using 2100 MHz band

Using CDMA for multiple access

Wideband frequency bandwidth: 5 MHz, with efficient signal bandwidth: 3.84 MHz

Carrier chip rate: 3.84 Mcps

All cells are using same frequency band

Using codes for separate user and channel

Increasing capacity with multiple frequencies

Inter-Frequency functionality to support mobility between frequencies

Inter-System functionality to support mobility between GSM and UMTS

Intra-frequency Handover: soft

Inter-frequency Handover: hard

Spreading factors (SF): 4512

UMTS Overview
WCDMA Codes:
In WCDMA two separate codes are used in the spreading operation :
Channelization code
DL: separates physical channels of different users and common channels, defines physical
channel bit rate
UL: separates physical channels of one user, defines physical channel bit rate
Scrambling code
DL: separates cells in same carrier frequency
UL: separates users

Duplex Modes
UTRA FDD (Frequency Division Duplex) Mode
Paired separate frequency bands
Duplex separation is 190 MHz
For low data rate, wide cell area

UTRA TDD (Time Division Duplex) Mode

Uplink and downlink in the same frequency band
Guard period is needed.
For higher data rate, small cell area
UMTS Overview
UMTS Channel (W-CDMA FDD) UMTS Channel (W-CDMA FDD)
Logical Channel: Physical Channel :
Control Channels (CCH) Mapped
Transport channels can be mapped to physical channels.
Broadcast Control Channel (BCCH) Physical Channels are characterized by :
Paging Control Channel (PCCH) UARFCN,
Common Control Channel (CCCH) Scrambling Code,
Dedicated Control Channel (DCCH) Channelization code
Traffic Channel (TCH)
Dedicated Traffic Channel (DTCH) So, in summarize:
Common Traffic Channel (CTCH) Logical Channel Transport Channel Physical Channel
Mapped

Transport Channels:
Common Transport Channels
Broadcast Channel (BCH)
Paging Channel (PCH)
Forward Access Channel (FACH)
High Speed Downlink Shared Channel (HS-
DSCH)
Random Access Channel (RACH)
Dedicated Transport Channels
