MICROORGANISMS
MICROORGANISMS ARE TINY ORGANISMS WHICH CANNOT BE SEEN
WITH OUR NAKED EYES. CAN ONLY BE SEEN UNDER MICROSCOPE.
Bacteria

Bacteria are very tiny unicellular organisms . Each

bacterium consists of a single cell with size that only cant be
seen with our naked eyes. They can be seen only under
higher powers of a microscope. Why were bacteria unknown
before the invention of the microscope about 200 years ago ?

Bacteria are named and classified according to their shapes

as shown in the next slide .
Pictures of bacteria
Shapes of bacteria
-Classified according to their shapes
-They can be known as cocci are in spherical bacteria. Rod-shaped
known as bacilli, Comma shaped known as vibrios and Spiral known
as spirilla.
SIZE of Bacteria

-Diameter ranges from 0.5 -1.0 micrometres

-Only visible using a high powered micoscope
Method of reproduction .

Sexually conjugation-DNA is transferred

from a bacterium to another through the
conjugation tube .

Asexual BINARY FISSION-parent cell

divides into 2 identical daughter cell.
-spore formation
NUTRITION
Photosynthesis, Chemosynthesis, Saprophytic and Parasitic. Bacteria
stores food in the form of glycogen granules in its cytoplasm.
METHOD OF NUTRITION :
AUTOTHROPIC- Some bacteria have chlorophyll and are able to make
their own food by photosynthesis-through sun.
Saprophytic : Feed on dead and decaying organisms
Parasitic: Obtain food from living organisms such as virus!!!
HABITAT

Can be found almost everywhere (foods, air, water,

soil, on any surfaces (such as table tops), on the
outside as well as inside of organisms especially in
the intestines
MODE OF RESPIRATION

-Some are aerobic, requiring oxygen to survive

-Some are anaerobic, do not need oxygen to
survive
-Somecan live in the presence or absence of
oxygen
