Golden Wattle - the official floral
symbol of Australia. Why a Kanagaroo
and an Emu? Common theory has it
that the Kangaroo and the Emu are
not particulary good at walking
backwards, so they are symbolic of
Australia's determination to
move forward as a nation. Each State
and Territory of Australia also have an
animal, bird and floral symbol.

Canberra

Canberra is Australias capital, inland from the country's southeast coast.

Surrounded by forest, farmland and nature reserves, it earns its nickname, the
"Bush Capital. The city's focal point is Lake Burley Griffin, filled with sailboats
and kayaks. On the lakeshore is the massive, strikingly modern Parliament
House, as well as museums including the National Gallery, known for its
indigenous art collections.

Sydney

Sydney, capital of New South Wales and one of Australia's largest cities, is best
known for its harbourfront Sydney Opera House, with a distinctive sail-like
design. Massive Darling Harbour and the smaller Circular Quay port are hubs of
waterside life, with the arched Harbour Bridge and esteemed Royal Botanic
Garden nearby. Sydney Towers outdoor platform, the Skywalk, offers 360-degree
views of the city and suburbs.

and the National Gallery of Victoria, with Australian and indigenous art.

an annual international arts gathering with spin-offs including fringe and film events.

Perth, capital of Western Australia, sits where the Swan River meets the

 The Great Barrier Reef
The Great Barrier Reef, off the coast
of Queensland in northeastern
Australia, is the largest living thing
on Earth, and even visible from
outer space. The 2,300km-long

of over 600 types of hard and soft
coral. It's home to countless species
of colourful fish, molluscs and

 Uluru or Ayers rock
Uluru, or Ayers Rock, is a massive sandstone monolith in the heart of the
Northern Territorys arid "Red Centre". The nearest large town is Alice
Springs, 450km away. Uluru is sacred to indigenous Australians and is
thought to have started forming around 550 million years ago. Its within
Uluru-Kata Tjuta National Park, which also includes the 36 red-rock domes
of the Kata Tjuta (colloquially The Olgas) formation.

 The Twelve Apostles
The Twelve Apostles is a collection of limestone stacks off the shore of the Port
Campbell National Park, by the Great Ocean Road in Victoria, Australia. Their
proximity to one another has made the site a popular tourist attraction. Currently
there are eight Apostles left, the ninth having collapsed dramatically in July 2005.
The name remains significant and spectacular especially in the Australian tourism
industry.
