Radio isotopes are unstable nuclei of atoms

which can decay and emit radiation

The three types of radiation are:
Alpha 2 protons, 2 neutrons positively
charged
Beta an electron negatively charged
Gamma high frequency electromagnetic
wave
Generating electricity
Sterilizing surgical instruments
Preserving food
Checking structural integrity of buildings
Used to give an age to carbon containing
materials.
Naturally occurring carbon dioxide on the air
contains some carbon 14.
Living organisms take in carbon dioxide and
there is a fixed ratio of carbon 12 to carbon
14
When the organism dies no more carbon 14
is absorbed and the remaining carbon 14
gradually undergoes radioactive decay to
form nitrogen
During this process an electron (beta particle)
is emitted from the nucleus of an atom.
The half life of carbon 14 is 5730 years
By measuring the ratio of carbon 12 to
carbon 14 the age can be estimated up to
about 60,000 years.
Cobalt 60 is used in radio therapy, It is used
to treat localised tumors .as emits gamma
radiation.
Iodine 131 is used to identify thyroid cancer.
Iodine 125 is used to treat prostate cancer
