Additional payments
O Full-time employees who earn wages are expected to
work a minimum number of hours each day, or each
week, as negotiated in their workplace agreement.
O Overtime is paid to people who work hours in addition
to those required by their workplace agreement and it is
paid at a higher rate. The most common rates of
overtime are:
O Time-and-a-half: the employee is paid at 1.5 times the
normal rate of pay .
O Double time: the employee is paid double the normal
rate of pay
Examples
O Jim usually works a 35-hour week and earns $44 per
hour. Calculate his total wages for the week if he works
an additional 6 hours at time-and-a-half.
O Kathy normally works a 38-hour week and earns $82
per hour. Calculate her total wages if she works an
additional 10 hours at double-time.
O Bert is paid $24.30 per hour for a normal 38-hour
week, and is paid time-and-a-half for any extra hours
worked. How much would he earn for a week in which he
worked 47 hours?
Annual leave loading
O Holiday loading (annual leave loading) is an extra
(or bonus) payment given to employers when they
take their annual holiday leave. It is typically
calculated at 17.5% of four weeks normal salary or
wages.
Example
O Tanya earns $810 per week. She is entitled to 4 weeks
annual holiday leave and receives an additional holiday
loading of 17.5%. Calculate Tanyas:
a) Normal pay for 4 weeks.
