What is demolition of building?

Demolition of a building means tearing down or falling down of a building with the help of
equipments or explosives. This seminar report deals with how a demolition work is to be
performed safely and also elaborates different steps involved before and during the
execution of a demolition process. The various steps involved before the demolition
process includes surveying, removal of hazardous materials, preparation of demolition
plan, stability report and the precautionary safety measures to be taken. The main
equipment used for these demolition activities are sledge hammer, excavators, bulldozers,
wrecking balls etc. and main explosives used are dynamites and RDX. When explosive
are used for the demolition, it is known as Implosion.
NECESSITY OF DEMOLITION

When the building is too old and cannot be put to further use
Structural changes
Development of city
Structural failure of the building
expansions
STEPS BEFORE DEMOLITION

1. Surveying.

2. Removal of hazardous material.

3. Preparation of plan

4. Stability report

5. Safety measures.

Precautions during demolitions

People involve in demolition work may not know the structural parts
of the building. So guidance in this aspect must be competent and
awared.
Plans of the structural must be checked before demolition.
First step is to ensure all the existing services likely electricity have
been disconnected.
Windows and doors opening must be boared up.
Internal entrances to the lifts shaft must be barricaded.
Balconies and cantilevers must be taken down first
Stairs must be kept free from debris
Must not stand on brickwork which is being demolished
Sequences of demolition

1. First task in the site that service to the building have been disconnected.

2. Demolition happens in reverse order of construction

3. The preliminary stripping out process such as roof covering, fittings pipe work and all
non structural part of building.

4. All rubble and debris must be lowered to ground constantly.

Methods of type of demolition

Methods of types of
demolition

Demolition by Pulling down Deliberate

hand Explosive
by rope collapse
Mechanical demolition
(Demolition ball and pusher arm
machinery )
Demolition by hand:-
Hand demolition is used in a wide variety of
applications in the demolition industry where
there is a need to do a specific job and
machinery is unsuitable due to access
problems . The tasks by hand are always
methodically undertaken to ensure that the
job is done safely in conjunction with risk
assessments & our method statements

Demolition by pooling down rope

Connecting structural members are disconnected first
allowing part of the remaining structure to be dragged
down by the use of some pulling/pushing equipments
such as powered jack, winching machine, pulley systems,
pushing arms, powered blocks or from the pull/push of a
hydraulic excavator.
Demolition by wreking
ball:-
The use of wrecking ball method requires a
crane equipped with a steel ball. The
destruction of the building is caused by the
impact energy of the steel ball suspended
from a crawler crane

Demolition by pusher arm

machine
Using of hydraulic arm with clamps mounted on
excavating machine One or more demolition machines
similar to normal excavator will be used to perform the
demolition work. This machine is mounted with a long
hydraulic arm with a crasher or clamp to do the actual
breaking. Sufficient working space is an essential criteria
in using this method.
Demolition by
deliberated collapsed
This method requires engineering expertise to
decide which key structural members should
be cut or removed to cause a collapse. Once
this method has begun, it is likely the
structure will remain unstable until it is down.
This method is best suited for bridges, silos,
chimneys and structures on isolated or heavily
controlled and secure sites.
Demolition by explosion
If using this method to demolish a building, contractor
should carry out a comprehensive risk and environmental
assessment on the effect of implosion on the
neighbourhood. A detail demolition design is also
important, which should cover: z Method to pre-weaken
the structure (e.g. demolish some load taking structures)
z Placement of explosive z Time-delay design to allow
the building to collapse under control director and
location
Demolition special structure

The following structure should require very special attention during

demolition:
1. Precast elements
2. Prestresed elements ,Cantilever structure , High headroom or
Large-spanned elements .
3. Structural elements under special jointing arrangement ,Composite
or steel structure , Hanging structures ,
4. Transfer plate and deep beams, Special floor structures - waffle
floor, flat slab , Arches, trusses or girders structures, Cladding or
curtain wall
5. Buildings located in contaminated site , Buildings used as oil or
dangerous goods storage , Marine structures , Underground
structures (tunnel, basement or foundation) , Soil retaining
structures
Removal of demolished material or
debris

Demolition will generate huge amount of debris. The safe and

effective removal of such construction remains will be a prime
concern in the operation. In this case, before and during demolition,
the following provision should thus be provided:
Overall debris disposal planning
Traffic routing for debris handling and vehicular access etc.
Adequate number of chutes for debris disposal
Sorting of non-structural materials such as timber and metal for
recycling.
Accommodation of debris is often dangerous for they may impose
extra load to the floor or wall (if leaned against onto).
Environment concern in demolition

Demolition is a dirty and dangerous process. In view of ensure such

works are done properly without causing any unnecessary
interference to general public, the following areas of environmental
concern should be noted.
The proper recycle or disposal of the construction waste
Treatment of harmful material (e.g. asbestos or contaminated
waste).
Control of dust generation.
Control of noise.
Control of waste water (including rain water carrying large amount of
mud running out from site)
Update on Demolition
Demolish or reduce height of 35 buildings around Mumbai airport,
Be careful and take safety
measures as civil engineering
