Why have a Research Aim?

A reference point against which overall research


outcome can be assessed

As important as having an aim/goal for any project


your embark on.

I believe that this nation should commit itself to


achieving the goal, before this decade is out, of
landing a man on the Moon and returning him safely
to earth (John Kennedy)

Brief and concise
Realistic (be achievable within the
constraints you have e.g. time, data
availability etc)
Identify how you will undertake the
dissertation (e.g. establishing current
knowledge, methodology, sample strategy
etc.)

A one sentence aim, highlighting your ultimate goal

Objectives:

Between three and five single sentence objectives.


Represent the breakdown of your aim (i.e. sub
aims)
Focus is on finding out specific issues while
achieving your aim
Will determine scope of study, literature to be
consulted and main data collection technique (i.e.
methodology) hence very important!!
Best considered as tasks to be achieved.
Often more tangible than the main aim.

Theory - Establishing background knowledge and

Test - Data collection, Sampling and analyses.

Conclude Exploring the results of the findings in the

Research Aim

An investigation of the current state of preparedness of the


flood damage management sector in the UK with regard to
the next major flood event: What lessons have been learnt?

Research Objectives
To review the existing guidance on flood damage
management and project management.
To review the effectiveness of the damage management
industry towards responding to major flood events
(Carlisle, Boscastle).
To survey from damage management companies their
existing methods of project managing flood claims.
