OIL SEED
(sunflower)

Oil content depends on the geographical location, environmental

temperature, cultural practices and other factors.
The protein content of the seed varies with the genotype from 9% to 24%
Selection for high oil content resulted In decreased protein(Globulins and
Albumins) content.
De-hulling, kernels are prepressed in a screw press or expeller then the oil is
extracted using an organic solvent.
free of toxic compounds.

JATROPHA

Jatropha seed contains up to 40% oil

Flowering plant, Fruits are produced in winter or through out the year
depending on temperature and soil moisture.
Seeds become mature when the capsule change from green to yellow.
Non-edible and use as a biofuel(Jatropha curcas)
Grows almost anywhere including wastelands, gravelly, sandy, and saline soils.
It can thrive on even some of the poorest stony soil and will grow in crevices of
rocks.
No need of care.
The use of pesticides are not necessary due the pesticidal, poisonous, and
fungicidal properties of the plant.
It is a hardy, drought and pest-resistant plant.
.

New uses for land in India: According to the Ministry of Rural Development,
only 173 million of 306 million hectares of land are used for cultivation, while
the remaining land is either eroded farm land or non-arable wasteland.
Such previously unused land can be used for Jatropha.
Government Focus: India's Planning Commission recommended a national
mission on biofuel, specifically Jatropha:
Stage 1 - 500,000 hectares of jatropha grown on government land across the country. The
fuel would be produced at the village level by local governing bodies.
Stage 2 - India's central government would plant a total of 12 million hectares of the plant
and privatizing the production of jatropha biodiesel
MOISTURE

Moisture content is 5 % - 10%.

Depending on moisture content physical properties changes.
One thousand seed mass and surface area of jatropha seed increased
from 741.1 to 903.15 g and 476.78 to 521.99 mm2 with increase
in moisture content, respectively. ... The angle of repose increased from
28.15 to 39.95 as the moisture content increased from 4.75 to 19.57%.
PROTEIN

The recovery of protein concentrate is highest when the proteins from the
seed cakes are solubilized at pH 11 for 1 h at 60 C and the precipitation of
these proteins is done by lowering the pH to 4.
Under these conditions, over 53% of the total proteins present in the seed
cakes were recovered in the protein concentrate.
The protein contents in the protein concentrates obtained from the oil-
containing seed cake and defatted seed cake were 760 g and 820 g
kg1respectively.
FATTY ACID COMPOSITION

78.4 percent unsaturated fatty acids mainly oleic acid (42.4 percent) and
linoleic acid (35.2 percent)
21.6 percent saturated fatty acids mainly consisted of palmitic acid (14.7
percent) and stearic acid (6.9 percent)
PROPERTIES
(physical and chemical)
APPLICATIONS

The seed cake produced as a by product is used as an excellent organic

fertilizer. Some parts of the plant are used for medical purposes.
The non edible vegetable oil extracted from the jatropha plant can be
used as an alternative to the diesel oil. The jatropha oil has advantageous
physicochemical and the characteristic that is equal to diesel. So cars can
use this oil with little change in their design.
used as an illuminant without refining
burns with clear free smoke and flame.
used to make soap in some parts of the world.
Jatrophine an alkaloid material is present in the latex of jatropha which is
assumed to have anti cancerous properties.
The juice of the leaf is used for piles as an external application.
The roots are believed to act as an antidote for snake bites.
OTHER USES OF JATROPHA

Seeds to produce insecticides, medicine for constipation, Oils extracted

from jatropha plant is used as biofuel.
Oil soften leather, lubricant in machinery. Because of excellent
combination of potassium, phosphorous and nitrogen the jatropha oil cake
is used as organic manure.
Plant fight against the skin diseases, rheumatism and as a curative for sores
on domestic livestock, Dark blue dye from the bark is used for coloring
cloths and fish nets.
Leaves and Twigs massage material for strained muscles, brewed tea to
combat malaria, to clean teeth, Powdered jatropha leaves are applied to
horses eyes to get rid of the flies since hydrogen cyanide is present in the
leaves.
