Fan description and functionality (1 of 2)
Two controllers and two fans in the same enclosure
Each controller controls one fan
If one controller is missing, then the other controller controls
both fans
Each controller measures its temperature, and also
measures the temperature of the other
Fans have trap doors to stop air flow for temperature control
Fans run at three speeds, similar to the HSV200-B
The speeds are based on temperature ranges

58 Rev. 9.21 HP Restricted

Fan description and functionality (2 of 2)
Controller talks to the fan every 10 seconds
If communication fails, various retries are tried before the
fan is failed
Retries include resetting the fan PIC multiple times
Eventually, it will try code-loading the fan
If its still broken, the fan PIC is held in reset, which makes
the fan run high speed (and the amber LED will be on)

Continuous Access EVA changes

65 Rev. 9.21 HP Restricted

Fast firmware upgrade (1 of 2)
Primary goals of online firmware upgrade
Avoid application failure
Minimize application disruption
Avoid host I/O disruption and timeouts
Key timing factors during firmware upgrade
Time required to resync controllers during an upgrade increases with
the configured virtual disk capacity
CPU speed is limiting factor in loading metadata from disk
Disk capacities are increasing faster than CPU speed
Requirements being addressed by EVA 6400/8400
Reduce disruption of firmware upgrades in large configurations
Provide a complete solution across all support EVA operating
systems and applications (no special integration requirements)
Applies to upgrades after initial 09501000 release

66 Rev. 9.21 HP Restricted

Fast firmware upgrade (2 of 2)
Design summary
Controllers resync concurrently, not staggered
Basic concept
Preserve an in-memory image of virtual disk metadata through
the resync during the upgrade
Do not require metadata to be loaded again from disk
Requires proper memory layout and formatting of the metadata in
memory
Establish a framework for continued improvements
In-memory metadata preservation framework
Preservation of individual metadata items is designed and
implemented independently over time and incrementally

67 Rev. 9.21 HP Restricted

Does not support large LUNs as members in Continuous
Access configurations (later)
Supported by modified and new SCS and SCMI events

68 Rev. 9.21 HP Restricted

Support for VRAID6 (1 of 2)
New disk group type (enhanced) will support VRAID6 LUNs
VRAID6 disk group can simultaneously contain VRAID types 0, 1, 5,
and 6
Legacy disk group type supported for backward compatibility, but
doesnt allow VRAID6
Striped set with dual distributed parity
Provides fault tolerance from two drive failures in same RSS
Single parity VRAID levels are vulnerable to data loss until the failed
drive is rebuilt
Dual parity gives time to rebuild the array without the data being at
risk if an additional drive fails in the RSS before the rebuild is
complete
Important because large-capacity drives lengthen the time needed to
recover from the failure of a single drive
Larger the drive, longer the rebuild time
Especially important for high availability systems
69 Rev. 9.21 HP Restricted
Support for VRAID6 (2 of 2)
4+2 striping in initial implementation
Always six (4+2) physical disks per stripe are used
66% of disk group capacity
VRAID0 = 100%, VRAID1 =50%, VRAID5=80%

Support for solid state disk drives (1 of 3)
New SSDs (STEC ZeusIOPS line) shall look identical to a
normal rotating disk drive with a few differences
The drive supports all required SCSI commands, and will
emulate all spinning-media behaviors by default
The new drives will have a new product revision string that
will identify them as an SSD
State component will require first character of new product
revision string to be a J character
Allows isolation of these drives to a SSD-only disk group
Due to possible high workloads executed against a single
disk, the disks in the small SSD-only disk group will be
accessed using both Fibre Channel ports of a loop pair
simultaneously

71 Rev. 9.21 HP Restricted

Support for solid state disk drives (2 of 3)
Must support SSD use restrictions
Limited number of SSD disk groups
Limited to a single disk group of SSDs to reduce complexity
and testing requirements
Firmware enforces limited SSDs to their own disk group
Limited count of SSDs per EVA
Initially, the requirement is to support a single disk group of 8
or 6 SSDs
Testing should be done to ensure that one-off (7 and 5) is also
covered for failure scenarios
Limited support for snapshots
Snapshots will be supported on these drives, but not
snapclones or mirrorclones
72 Rev. 9.21 HP Restricted
Support for solid state disk drives (3 of 3)
Must support SSD use restrictions (continued)
Limited support for Continuous Access
Continuous Access will be not be supported on these drives at
initial launch
Must support external interface requirements
Maintenance command to simulate SSDs is available
through the SCS_DEBUG (sd) command with option 29
The drive type of a solid state drive is 2

73 Rev. 9.21 HP Restricted

Business Copy EVA enhancements
Increased to 64 snapshots per source virtual disk
Combined capacities of a single source virtual disk and its snapshots
should not exceed 80TB (recommended best practice)
Snapshots can be space-efficient or regular
Added support for instant restore from the snapshot of a mirrorclone
Restores data directly from the snapshot back to the source virtual
disk for optimal performance (no data is copied to the mirrorclone)
Previous support included instant restore from a snapshot or
fractured mirrorclone
Increased multi-attach and multi-fracture of snapshots and mirrorclones
to 32
Point-in-time copies are attached/fractured atomically and form a
write-order-consistent set
Supports LVM configurations that span up to 32 source virtual disks

74 Rev. 9.21 HP Restricted

Continuous Access EVA LUN shrink
LUN expansion has been supported previously
Support for synchronous, asynchronous, and enhanced
asynchronous relationships
Not supported for large LUNs

75 Rev. 9.21 HP Restricted

DR group support for VRAID6
With XCS 09501000, DR group members can be VRAID6
There are compatibility issues with older firmware that
does not support VRAID6
If user adds a member to a DR group without specifying the
VRAID type for the destination
VRAID type of source virtual disk is used
If VRAID6 is used, and if destination system does not support
VRAID6, an error is returned
Returns a SCMI error status if the firmware at the destination
system does not support VRAID6 virtual disks
Returns a SCMI error status if the disk group at the destination
system does not support VRAID6 virtual disks

76 Rev. 9.21 HP Restricted

Continuous Access EVA and SSDs
SSD disk group support is specifically excluded for
Continuous Access EVA in this release
Command View EVA provides automatic disk group
selection by default for certain operations
Very easy to allow EVA to automatically select an SSD disk
group for a created DR member or log
A unit previously created on an SSD disk group could be
inadvertently added to a DR group
Informative events must be generated for troubleshooting
when
A unit on an SSD disk group is added to a DR group
A DR log unit is created on an SSD disk group
A DR member unit is created on an SSD disk group

77 Rev. 9.21 HP Restricted

Failover during normalization
Previous firmware versions have prevented a site failover during
normalization
Applied to both planned and unplanned site failovers
A planned site failover happens when the customer gives a failover
command and the links are up
An unplanned site failover occurs when the same command is given
after both links go down
Because the new source may not have all the data from the copy,
failover wasnt allowed in either case
New feature allows customers more control
Allow both planned and unplanned failover and let the customer
handle any potential data mismatch
Command View EVA will put in a warning for when the user selects a
planned failover
An event will be logged for a failover during normalization in both the
planned and unplanned cases

Midplane description
M6412A midplane is an active midplane
Provides power from the power supplies to the backplane
and I/O modules
Routes Fibre Channel traffic from the I/O modules to the
backplane
Two temperature sensors
Contains a PIC processor that does the following
Drive LED signals (not activity)
Monitors presence of fans and power supplies
I2C slave for data collection from I/O module
Controls the power switch
Controls midplane NVRAM

108 Rev. 9.21 HP Restricted

I/O module description
Two I/O modules per enclosure
A and B I/O modules decided by slot pin
Contains the EMP (Enclosure Management Processor) and
a CTS (Cut Through Switch)
CTS is 20-port version of part used on the M5314C
EMP is active participant on the Fibre Channel loop, it takes
an arbitrated loop physical address (ALPA)
Communication to EMP is inband through SCSI Enclosure
Services (SES)
I/O modules communicate together through UART bus

109 Rev. 9.21 HP Restricted

Drive enclosure firmware
Multi-threaded firmware
Fully upgradeable inband
Watchdog timers to monitor all firmware threads and other
I/O module
I/O module reset if timer expires
Reset logged
Basic CLI through serial port (support only)
Firmware is active participant of the loop to report status
and receive commands

110 Rev. 9.21 HP Restricted

Shelf identification (1 of 2)
Either shelf I/O module can
receive a shelf number from the
initiator (HSV300, HSV4x0)
Shelf number is received through
an SES page
No supported way to manually
set shelf number
When shelf I/O module receives
SES page with shelf number it is
written to EEPROM on midplane
Displayed on the 7-segment
display on the controller
7-segment shelf
I/O modules read EEPROM
number display
periodically to discover any
changes to the shelf number

111 Rev. 9.21 HP Restricted

Shelf identification (2 of 2)
Shelf number has no relationship to physical location within a rack
Shelf number will be used in error and event logs for reference purposes
Array controllers assign a shelf number to a shelf
Both I/O modules use the same midplane EEPROM location to read the
shelf number
Valid shelf number are 01-99, 00 is used as a default until a number is
assigned
Conflicts for a given shelf number will be resolved by awarding the
enclosure with the lowest WWN the desired shelf number
Remaining enclosures in conflict will be assigned the first available
value, starting at 01
Whenever an I/O module is being assigned a new shelf number, the
controller will log an event indicating that the enclosure is being
assigned a new value from the old value

112 Rev. 9.21 HP Restricted

Cut Through Switch
New 20-port Cut Through Switch (CTS) is chip based on the
older 18-port CTS from the M5314C
Uses the same code and implementation as the M5314C
Uses same policy-based matrix for drive bypass
CTS managed by the EMP. All bypass and operations are
done by the EMP.

174 Rev. 9.21 HP Restricted
VERSION command
New VERSION command is added to display the SSSU version

175 Rev. 9.21 HP Restricted

Option to connect to a different management
server within an SSSU session
Currently there is no way to connect to a different
Command View EVA management server inside a SSSU
session
User has to close the current session and re-open a new
session
A big problem when user thinks that an EVA managed by a
particular Command View EVA server is not managing it
SELECT MANAGER command to be added
If used, previous session will be closed
If user wants to go back to previous management server,
must use SELECT MANAGER again

176 Rev. 9.21 HP Restricted

Enhance user login to prompt three times
SSSU should prompt for Command View EVA user
credentials at least three times when user enters wrong
credentials
Now, if you give incorrect credentials
You get the message Error opening https connection. Press
return to exit. On pressing any key, the SSSU session closes.
You have to again open a SSSU session to connect to a
different Command View EVA management session
SSSU code will change to allow user three chances to give
correct Command View EVA credentials before having to
open a new SSSU session

177 Rev. 9.21 HP Restricted

Redirect command output
Users should be given an option to redirect output to a file
like LINUX or UNIX shell
Would be useful for debugging
File path should be in the same machine where SSSU is
executed
Example: LS VD FULL > e:\output.txt
The file output.txt in e: will contain the output of the command
LS VD FULL
Shell displays a command prompt afterward
Output redirection also available after the grep option
Both options can be specified in a single command, but it has
to be in a certain order, for example
LS VD FULL ! grep host > e:\output.txt

178 Rev. 9.21 HP Restricted

New grep option
SSSU doesnt provide a grep option like the Linux or
UNIX shell to look for a particular word or phrase
Makes it difficult to see a single property from the list of
property returned
User must browse through the list manually and look for the
property
New option would be invoked from any command, so a
generic option has been added to the keyword table
Proposed syntax: command | grep string
Example: LS VD FULL | grep size
This will list all the lines that the word size is a part of
Output redirection is available

179 Rev. 9.21 HP Restricted

Restoring configurations that use
asynchronous data replication
CAPTURE CONFIGURATION command captures the
configuration of a selected storage system
Captures in a designated file
Divided into five subfiles
Can capture configuration of the array for a DR group in
both synchronous and asynchronous write mode
One can change the properties of the source DR group only
when the write mode is synchronous
When the write-mode is asynchronous in the source DR group,
the properties such as the Max log size cant be changed
One has to revert back to synchronous mode to make change in
the Max log size
This change will allow capture of a configuration with
asynchronous data replication (no error message)

180 Rev. 9.21 HP Restricted

Updated commands and options
ADD SYSTEM, ADD DISK_GROUP
New DISKGROUP_TYPE options has been added

Workarounds (1 of 5)
Using the 10.x.x.x network with the Management Module
If the Management Module is configured in the 10.x.x.x network, do not
use 10.0.0.0, 10.0.0.1, 10.0.0.2, or 10.0.0.3 as the IP address for the
Management Module or any device connected to the Management
Module
These IP addresses are used by the Management Module
Controller port becomes unresponsive after failure of redundant
controller
After an HSV300-S controller failure in an EVA4400 connected to a
Linux host, the front-end port on the redundant controller can become
unresponsive
HP is working to resolve this issue
For the supported operating system and HBA driver versions, see the
latest HP HBA driver release notes

207 Rev. 9.21 HP Restricted

Workarounds (2 of 5)
EVA4400 port does not log in to the embedded switch
It has been observed that an EVA4400 host port will
occasionally not log in to the embedded switch
It is believed that this condition occurs if the port does not
negotiate to the proper speed setting
If you encounter this issue, restart the controller to bring the
port online
HP is continuing to investigate this issue
Boot support on virtual disks
Boot support is not supported on any virtual disk that is 2TB
or greater
This limitation applies to all operating systems
