HISTORY & SETUP OF BOEING

The BOEING company, founded by WILLIAM EDWARD BOEING on 15th July 1916 at
Seattle, USA. Is an American multinational corporation. Headquartered in Chicago, Illinois,
United States with Mr. Dennis A. Muilenburg as Chairman, President and CEO, BOEING
is the worlds largest aerospace company and leading manufacturer of commercial
Jetliners, military aircrafts, electronic and defense systems, weapons, satellites, and space-
crafts.
There are more than 10000 BOEING commercial jetliners in service and a record 5500
BOEING airplanes are currently on order and it employs more than 83000 people
worldwide.
It is a well known fact that starting an airline is tough, running a profitable airline is even
tougher. Few businesses have as many variables and challenges as airlines. They are
capital intensive, competition is fierce.
Airlines are fossil fuel dependent and often at the mercy of fuel price volatility. Operations
are labor intensive and subject to government control and political influence. And a lot
depends on the weather.
BOEING DELIVERS OUTCOMES AND INSIGHTS THAT ARE MAKING THE WORLD A
PLACE WITH LIMITLESS POSSIBILITIES.

HISTORY & SETUP OF AIRBUS INDUSTRIE
AIRBUS industrie began as a consortium of European Aviation Firms by a government initiative
between France, West Germany, and the U.K. that originated in 1967 and it was formally
established as a economic interest group on 18 December 1970, Headquartered in Blagnac,
France. Its initial shareholders were the French company AEROSPATIALE and the West Germany
company Deutsche Airbus, each owing a 50% share.
The name AIRBUS was taken from a non proprietary term used by the airline industry in the 1960s to
refer to a commercial aircraft of a certain size and range, for this term was acceptable to the French
linguistically.

Initially AIRBUS industrie was a consortium of :

AEROSPATIALE (France)
DEUTSCHE AIRBUS (Germany)
BRITISH AEROSPACE (U.K.)
FOKKER-VFW (Dutch company)
CASA (Spanish company)

However, consolidation of European and Aerospace companies in 1999 and 2000 allowed the
establishment of a simplified Joint Stock Company owned by EUROPEAN AERONAUTIC DEFENCE
and SPACE COMPANY (EADS) (80%) and BAE systems (20%)
The final assembly production is based at Toulouse,France: Hamburg,Germany; Seville,Spain;
Tianjin,China; Mobile;United States, and subsidiary company in Japan, U.S., India,Dubai.

MILITARY
In the late 1990s Airbus became increasingly interested in developing and selling to the military
aviation market.
It embarked on two main fields of development: aerial refueling with the Airbus A310 MRTT
(Multi-Role Tanker Transport) and the Airbus A330 MRTT, and tactical airlift with the A400M
5
COMPETITION BETWEEN AIRBUS AND
BOEING
Technology
With Airbus now an established competitor to Boeing, both companies use advanced technology to seek
performance advantages in their products. Many of these improvements are about weight reduction and
fuel efficiency.
Safety and quality
Both aircraft manufacturers have good safety records on recently manufactured aircraft and generally,
both firms have a positive reputation of delivering well-engineered and high-quality products.
Airbus A320 vs Boeing 737
In terms of sales, while the Boeing 737 Next Generation outsold the Airbus A320 family since its
introduction in 1998, it is still lagging overall with 7,033 orders against 7,940 in January 2016. Airbus
received 4,471 orders since the A320neo family launch in December 2010, while the 737 MAX got 3,072
from August 2011 till January 2016
In terms of deliveries, Boeing has shipped 9,522 aircraft of the 737 family since late 1967, with 8,016 of
those deliveries since March 1, 1988, and has a further 4,430 on firm order as of May 2017.
In comparison, Airbus has delivered 7,610 A320 series aircraft since their certification / first delivery in
early 1988, with another 5,501 on firm order (as of May 2017).
Though both manufacturers have a broad product range in various segments from single-aisle to wide-
body, their aircrafts donot always compete head to head. Airlines see this as a benefit since they get a
more complete product range from 100 seats to 500 seats than if both companies offered identical
aircrafts.

CONTINUED.

In recent years BOEING 777 has outsold its counterparts, which include A-340 family as well as the A-
330-300 .
The A-380 is anticipated to further reduce sales of BOEING 747.
AIRBUS has also proposed the A-350 XWB to compete with BOEING 787 DREAMLINER.

SUBSIDY CONFLICTS
BOEING has continually protested over LAUNCH AID and other forms of government aid to
AIRBUS, while AIRBUS has argued that BOEING receives illegal subsidies through military and
research contracts and tax breaks.
WTO ruled in august 2010 and in may 2011 that AIRBUS had received improper government subsidies
through loans with below market rates from several European countries. In a separate ruling in
February 2011, WTO found that BOEING had received local and federal aid in violation of WTO rules.

ENVIRONMENTAL RECORD
AIRBUS has committed to the Flight path 2050, an aviation industry plan to reduce noise , CO2 and
Nox emissions.
AIRBUS was the first aerospace business to become ISO 14001 CERTIFIED, in January 2007 : this is
a broader certification covering the whole organization, not just the aircraft it produces.
AIRBUS has joined Honeywell and JetBlue in an effort to reduce pollution and dependence on oil, to
develop a biofuel that could be used by 2030.
