WHY DRY DOCK THE SHIP
As per SOLAS CH-I REG -10- a minimum of
two inspections of the outside of the ships
bottom during any 5 years period shall be
carried out. The interval between any 2
such inspections shall not exceed 36
months.
It is done by class society surveyors .
PREPARATION FOR A DRY DOCK
Vessel will create a defect list known as

Dock master will contact the ship , he is

trained for block arrangement and stability
during dry docking .
The dock master will ask for following things
DOCKING PLAN
ARRIVAL STABILITY CONDITION
PRE DOCKING CONDITION
BEFORE ARRIVAL YARD

Cover accommodation flooring with plastic .

Sewage holding tank is empty & flushed .
Cover all portholes & bridge windscreen .
Make list of manhole doors.
Inventory of manuals.
PRE DOCKING STABILITY CONDITION
Upright
Positive initial GM (GM fluid)
Trim - if possible even-keel or slight trim
by stern
Double bottom tank kept either dry or
pressed up - reduced FSE
If initial GM is small - D.B. tank to be
pressed up to increase
DOCKING OF THE VESSEL
Dock master discusses plan with the master.
The pilot will bring the ship parallel to the
dock.
Tugs will assist .
Mooring ropes are passed .
WHEN COMING INTO DRY DOCK

The vessel will line up with her center

line vertically over the keel blocks .
Dock gates will be closed & pumping out
will be commenced .
F

No effect on ships Initial Stability

WHEN COMING INTO DRY DOCK

The rate of pumping will be reduced as

the ship sternpost comes near the block.
Once the sternpost touches the blocks
the upthrust force starts to act .
At this moment part of the ships weight
gets transferred to the blocks .
P

P is the Upthrust Force acting at first point of touching the ground.

Commence Critical Period
WHEN COMING INTO DRY DOCK

When the ships weight gets transferred

to the keel blocks ,vessel will suffer loss
of her GM.
The time interval between the sternpost
landing on the blocks to full ship on the
blocks is called critical period .

Virtual Loss Of GM

During

Critical Period
Method 1 GG1

Method 2 MM1
Method 1

When the vessel comes in contact

with the blocks, it is assumed that
there is a transfer of weight 'P'
from the keel to the blocks.

Hence there is a virtual rise of

ship's G (discharged of weight
below G)
Sueing Point

at AP
P

P force is increasing gradually as the trim change by HeadVessel

is still in Critical Period
WHEN COMING INTO DRY DOCK

Vessel must have positive effective GM

that to be maintained throughout the
critical period .
If not vessel may heel over ,slip off the
blocks due to external force acting on
the ship .
P

P is the Upthrust Force acting at first point of touching the ground.

Commence Critical Period
M

G1
Initial GM loss by GG1 after completed
the Critical Period

This is due to Upthrust Force or P

Method 1

GG1 = P x KG in metres
W-P
Method 2

When the vessel comes in contact

with the blocks, it is assumed that
there is a transfer of buoyancy 'P'
to the keel blocks.

Hence there is a reduction in KM

while the weight and KG are
remains constant.

VESSEL ON THE BLOCKS
Before dock master starts to remove dock water, a diver
will make an underwater inspection. The diver will ensure
that echo sounder and log sensors are clear and not sitting
under the blocks. He will also ensure physically that
vessels centerline is in line with the blocks.
Dock master will let the vessel know when Stern has
touched the blocks and when the ship is on the blocks.
After the ship is on the blocks, dock master will tell to start
pumping out ballast.
Once the dock is dry and ship sitting on the blocks, you
can line up to deballast all ballast tanks by gravity. This is
to let all the water drain whatever is left in the ballast
tanks.
Bottom plugs are removed to ensure tanks are empty and
dry
ARRANGEMENTS PROVIDED BY THE DOCK

CHECKS BEFORE UNDOCKING
All Departments in charge to confirm that repairs assigned under
their departments are completed successful with tests and
surveys are carried out .
Check rudder plug and vent and also check if anode are fitted
back on rudder.
Check hull for proper coating of paint .
Check Impressed Current Cathodic Protection system (ICCP)
anodes are fitted in position and cover removed.
Check Anodes are fitted properly on hull and cover removed (if
ICCP is not installed).
Check all double bottom tank plugs are secured.
Check all sea inlets and sea chests gratings are fitted.
Check echo sounder and logs are fitted and covers removed .
Check of propeller and rudder are clear from any obstruction .
CHECKS BEFORE UNDOCKING
Check if anchor and anchor chain is secured on board.
Check all external connection (shore water supply, shore power
cables) are removed.
Check inside the ship all repaired overboard valve are in place
Secure any moving item inside the ship
Check sounding of all tank and match them with the value obtain
prior entering the dry dock.
Check stability and trim of the ship. Positive GM should be
maintained at all time.
If there is any load shift or change in stability, inform the dock master
Go through the checklist again and satisfactory checklist to be signed
by Master.
Master to sign authority for Flood Certificate.
When flooding reaches overboard valve level, stop it and check all
valves and stern tube for leaks.
AFTER UNDOCKING / PRIOR SAILING
OUT FROM SHIPYARD.
M/E tried out
Emergency Stops from Bridge and Local Station to
be confirmed.
Emergency Fire Pump to be tried out if possible. If
not same to be confirmed after adequate Ballast is
taken at the earliest opportunity.
Sea trial carried out , all parameters recorded .
