What is Pes Cavus??
Pes Cavus is a foot condition clasified by an arch that
doesnt fall flat upon bearing weight.
Pes Cavus is know to occur in approximately 8-15% of
the population

Pes Cavus - Symptoms
Foot Drop
Inbalance/Instability of the foot region
Pain in the metatarsal heads
Frequent lateral ankle sprains
Hammertoes
Pain while walking and standing
Stiffness in the lower leg and foot joints
Heel pain
Pain and stiffness of the medial arch or anywhere along the mid-portion
of the foot
There may be associated discomfort within and near the ankle joint.
The knees, hips, and lower back may be the primary source of
discomfort
Pes Cavus - Diagnosis
Diagnosis of cavus foot includes a review of the patients
family history. The foot and ankle surgeon examines the foot,
looking for a high arch and possible calluses, hammertoes and
claw toes. The foot is tested for muscle strength, and the
patients walking pattern and coordination are observed. If a
neurologic condition appears to be present, the entire limb
may be examined. The surgeon may also study the pattern of
wear on the patient's shoes.
X-rays are sometimes ordered to further assess the condition.
In addition, the surgeon may refer the patient to a
neurologist for a complete neurologic evaluation.
Pes Cavus - Cause

Neuromuscular condition is neuromuscular condition

may affect nerves and muscles taht the hollowing of the
foot.
Congenital cause may the derived from familial history
of residual club foot, and the condition happens
spontaneously
Trauma is severe foot trauma cloud cause pes cavus
through fracture,burns etc.
Pes Cavus - Treatment

Non-surgical treatment can undergo

physical terapy to stretch out the tightened
muscles and get the Orthotics
Surgical treatment only initiated if there is
severe pain
Pes Cavus - Treatment
Generally, custom-made semi-rigid or semi-flexible functional
posted orthotics are most effective for this foot type. They often
include shock absorbing material in the arch.
Orthotic devices. Custom orthotic devices that fit into the shoe
can be beneficial because they provide stability and cushioning to
the foot.
Shoe modifications. High-topped shoes support the ankle, and
shoes with heels a little wider on the bottom add stability.
Bracing. The surgeon may recommend a brace to help keep the
foot and ankle stable. Bracing is also useful in managing foot drop.

Prevention

Pes Cavus, if noticed early on while the foot is still flexible

can be treated. The podiatrist may recommend a
stretching regimen that should theoretically help to keep
the foot muscles loose, reducing the probability that the
plantar flexion becomes fixed thereby reducing the effects
of the cavus foot.
