NATURAL SCIENCE
YEAR 6
2017/2018
2.1 Nutrition
2.1 NUTRITION

Nutrition allows living things to get

the nutrients they need to live.

There are four systems that

participate in nutrition:
THE 4 SYSTEMS IN NUTRITION
THE CIRCULATORY
SYSTEM
Sessions 3-4
2.1.2 The circulatory system.
FUNCTIONS
The circulatory system moves
blood around the body.

This blood contains important

elements:
Nutrients.
Oxygen.
Carbon dioxide.
ELEMENTS
2.1.2 The circulatory system.
The circulatory system has different
elements.

BLOOD BLOOD VESSELS

THE HEART
ELEMENTS 2.1.2 The circulatory system.
1. BLOOD
It contains

Oxygen Carbon dioxide

Nutrients
ELEMENTS
2.1.2 The circulatory system.

It is made up of
1. BLOOD

Nutrients
fight infection
and stop the
bleeding.
(SCABS)
Oxygen
&
Carbon dioxide

2.1.2 The circulatory system.
1. BLOOD

RED BLOOD CELLS PLASMA

WHITE BLOOD CELLS PLATELETS

ELEMENTS
2.1.2 The circulatory system.
2. BLOOD VESSELS
ARTERIES

Carry blood from the

heart to the rest of the
body.

This blood contains

OXYGEN.
ELEMENTS
2.1.2 The circulatory system.
2. BLOOD VESSELS
VEINS

Carry blood from the

body back to the heart.

This blood contains

CARBON DIOXIDE.
ELEMENTS
2.1.2 The circulatory system.
2. BLOOD VESSELS
CAPILLARIES

Connect arteries
and veins.
2.1.2
ELEMENTS The circulatory system.
ELEMENTS
3. THE HEART
Its a muscle.
Its divided into 4
chambers.
Top chambers
(atria) receive
blood from
Bottomoutside.
chambers
(ventricles)
receive blood
from inside.
Valves: Prevent
flowing
backwards.

2.1.2 The circulatory system.
ELEMENTS
CIRCULATION
1. PULMONARY
CIRCULATION

From the heart to the

lungs
and back.
2. SYSTEMIC
CIRCULATION

From the heart to the rest

of the body and back.
2.1.2 The circulatory system.
ELEMENTS
1. Deoxygenated CIRCULATION
blood (no oxygen),
enter the heart
through the right
atrium and passes
to the right
ventricle.
1.
Then, it leaves the
heart through the
pulmonary artery. It Starting
goes to the lungs. point
2.1.2 The circulatory system.
ELEMENTS
CIRCULATION

2. In the lungs, blood 2.

leaves CO2 and
collects O2.

Oxygenated blood
returns to the left
atrium through the
pulmonary veins.
2.1.2 The circulatory system.
ELEMENTS
CIRCULATION

3. Blood flows from

the left atrium to the
left ventricle.

Then, it is pumped out 3.

of the heart through
AORTA, the biggest
artery in the body.
2.1.2 The circulatory system.
ELEMENTS
CIRCULATION

4. The AORTA carries

the blood to the
capillaries in the rest
of the body.

There, blood releases

O2 and nutrients and
collects the CO2.
4.
2.1.2 The circulatory system.
ELEMENTS
CIRCULATION
5. Deoxygenated
blood passes from
capillaries to the
largest veins in the
body (superior and
inferior vena cava).

This blood is taken

back to the heart.
5.
The process begins
again.
