The Discoveries of Cerium
Date of Discovery:
Cerium as named for the asteroid Ceres
which was discovered in 1801, in 1803 the
element was discovered, and in 1875 people
prepared the metal.

People who discovered it:

1. 1803: Klaproth & Berzelius
2. 1875: Hillebrand & Norton (who prepared
the metal)

The Element
Cerium is an iron-grey ish metal.
It is capable of being shaped and
formed.
It slowly decomposes in water, but
very rapid in hot water.
It may produce/ignite a spark when
scratched with a knife.

The Crytal Structure 7

Production
Mineral mix crushed, ground, and
forged with concentrated sulfuric acid
to produce sulfuric barely soluble in the
epidermis of the earth metals. The filtrate
acidic partially neutralized with sodium
hydroxide to a pH of 3-4. Thorium
precipitate out of solution as hydroxide
and subsequently removed / separated.

8
Application
The main technological application for
cerium (III) oxide is as catalytic converters
for the reduction of emissions of CO in gases
from motor vehicles. In particular, cerium
oxide is added to the ingredients of diesel
talent.
Cerium (IV) oxide is regarded as one of the
most efficient materials for the precision
grinding optical components. Cerium
compounds are also used in the
manufacture of glasses, as well as a
component of the dye.
9
Uses of Cerium
Used in the manufacture e of
pyrophoric alloys for cigarette
lighters.
Can be also use as ceric sulphate,
for quantitative analysis.
Also can be used for glass
polishing, incandescent gas
mantles, Petroleum refining, and
Arc lighting
10
Dangers of Cerium
Cerium compounds are rarely
encountered by human/ most people,
because cerium is most likely used to
present fire and explosion hazard.
It doesnt cause much pollution but it can
make fire that can be dangerous to the
environment, especially when using kids
are playing with matches that uses
cerium it can be very dangerous.
