INTRODUCTION:

A compressed-air vehicle is powered by an air

engine, using compressed air, which is stored in a
tank.
Instead of mixing fuel with air and burning it in
the engine to drive pistons with hot expanding
gases, compressed air vehicles (CAV) use the
expansion of compressed air to drive their pistons.

Need for CAV

Fossil fuels, which meet most of the world's
energy demand today, are being depleted rapidly.
Also, their combustion products are causing global
problems, such as the greenhouse effect, ozone
layer depletion, acid rains and pollution

HISTORY AND DEVELOPMENT:

Compressed air has been used since the 19th century to

power mine locomotives and trams in cities such as Paris (via a
central, city-level, compressed air energy distribution system), and
was previously the basis of naval torpedo propulsion.
First ever try to build a compressed air vehicle was done during
1838-1840 by Andraud and Tessi du Motay.
During the construction of the Gotthardbahn from 1872 to 1882,
pneumatic locomotives were used in the construction of
the Gotthard Rail Tunnel and other tunnels of the Gotthardbahn.

THE ENGINE

The engine that is installed in a compressed air car

uses compressed air which is stored in the cars tank
at a pressure as high as 4500 psi.
The technology used by air car engines is totally
different from the technology that is used in
conventional fuel cars. They use the pressure
generated by the expansion of compressed air to run
their pistons. This results in no pollution, as air is
the only product that is used by the engine to
produce power, and the waste material is the air
itself.

TYPES OF ENGINES

Reciprocating type (MDI) Rotary type (Engine air)

www.themegallery.com

BASIC PRINCIPLES

air is compressed to high pressure at a stationary

compressor station, transferred to an on-board storage
tank, and slowly released to power a pneumatic motor.
The motor converts air power to mechanical power,
which is transferred to the wheels and is used to
operate the vehicle.

The CAT 34 Engine (MDI)

The air coming from the high pressure tank
crosses a pressure reducer (patented by
MDI which allows a quasi-isothermal
transformation). It is then used in a system
of expansion with work, consisting of an
active chamber and an expansion cylinder.

Operating modes

1. Mode 1: mono energy (compressed air only)

2. Mode 2: simple dual energy
3. Mode 3: autonomous dual energy

4. Mode 4:Dual energy with recompression of the

tanks:

The Di Pietro Engine (ENGINEAIR)

The Di Pietro motor concept is based on a

rotary piston. The Di Pietro motor uses a
simple cylindrical rotary piston (shaft driver)
which rolls, without any friction, inside the
cylindrical stator

Air Storage Tank

The storage tank would be made up of
carbon fiber to reduce the car's weight and
prevent an explosion, in case of a direct
collision, the tanks just split but dont explode.
Carbon-fiber tanks are capable of containing
air pressure up to 4500 psi, something the
steel tanks are not capable of.

Refuelling

1. Air Stations (between one and three minutes) depending on the

vehicle

2. Electric plug (between 1h 30 mins and 4h 30 mins) depending

on the vehicle

3. While running in the dual-energy mode

Energy losses of CAV

www.themegallery.com

Methods to reduce losses

1.By adopting multi-stage compression and expansion

2. By cooling the tank while compression and heating the air
during expansion .So during the compression process, if we
remove the heat from the air we move the process closer to
isothermal so that it takes less energy to compress the same
amount of air.
3. By using lighter materials like Magnesium in body and
chassis.
4. By installing on board mechanisms to compress air while the
vehicle is moving

Production costs

1. Production cost of current marketable

compressed-air car Between $10,000-
$15,000

2. Production cost of compressed air car

(with solar panels and Magnesium car
frame)between $15,000-$25,000

Advantages

Their potential advantages over other vehicles include:

1. Reducing pollution from one source, as opposed to the millions of
vehicles on the road.
2. Transportation of the fuel would not be required due to drawing
power off the electrical grid. This presents significant cost benefits.
Pollution created during fuel transportation would be eliminated.
3. Compressed air technology reduces the cost of vehicle production.
4. There is no need to build a cooling system, fuel tank, Ignition
Systems or silencers.
5. The mechanical design of the engine is simple and robust.
6. Low manufacture and maintenance costs as well as easy
maintenance.
7. Compressed-air tanks can be disposed of or recycled with less
pollution than batteries.

Disadvantages
1. Like the modern car and most household appliances, the principal
disadvantage is the indirect use of energy.
2. The temperature difference between the incoming air and the
working gas is smaller. In the expansion process, the device gets
very cold and may ice up in cool, moist climates.
3. Refueling the compressed air container using a home or low-end
conventional air compressor may take as long time..
4. Tanks get very hot when filled rapidly. It very dangers it some time
bloused.
5. Only limited storage capacity of the tanks. So we not take drive
on long time.

Applications

1. An eco-friendly way of transportation

2. Since the exhaust is pure air at very low temperatures
it can be used to air condition the vehicle
3. Used in pharmaceutical and medical industry where
zero pollution is needed
4. Provides an affordable and efficient transportation
5. Can be adopted in hybrids to increase efficiency
