Interference analysis: Digital SFN Theoretical consideration

The basis of SFN network planning is to synchronize the signals

- The first step to build a digital SFN network is to define the reference server on which
the receiver will be connected:

- The Best Server (in terms of FS level)

- The First Server (in terms of time of arrival)

Interference analysis: Digital SFN Theoretical consideration

The SFN network interference analysis is based on :

- The time difference between the arrival of the signals at the same location

Considering Station 1 as the reference station:

ToA = ToA 2 ToA 1

Interference analysis: Digital SFN Theoretical consideration

- Interference calculations in SFN networks take into account both C/N+I ratio and
difference in time of arrival of the signals (ToA).

- ToA is compared to the Guard interval and Usable symbol.

- The signal can be Constructive
- The signal can be Destructive
- The signal can be Constructive and destructive

- In case of Constructive/Destructive signal, the interferences are balanced according to

a weighting coefficient.
-This weighting coefficient is defined by the EBU (European Broadcasting Union)

Introduction to SFN Gain
- When the signals are totally or partially constructive the FS level is improved.
-The difference is called the SFN gain.

-The synchronization threshold depends on the receiving equipment

- This threshold defines the minimum signal level for a signal to be added constructively
to the wanted signal (for suitable ToA)

Illustration Coverage Threshold = 54 dBV/m

C2
C1 = 53 dBV/m
C2 = 53 dBV/m
C1 Rx
The receiver would not be considered as covered by
either transmitter on its own
Lets consider a synchronization threshold to 52 dBV/m.
With both received signals at a level of 53 dBV/m, the synchronization
is possible.
(C1+C2) = 56 dBV/m > coverage threshold => The Rx point is covered

Introduction to SFN Gain

- The synchronization threshold is defined from the synchronization margin:

- Margin over Noise => SynchroThreshold = Noise + SynchroMargin

C/N Synchronization
Margin
Noise - The synchronization threshold has to be
lower or equal to the coverage threshold

Interference analysis Launch the calculation

- Check the option Display Best Server

when C/N+I >=
-This option permits to filter the result on
the protection ratio value:
- If the C/N+I calculation result is below the
C/N value: The point is interfered.
- If the C/N+I calculation result is over the
C/N value: The point is not interfered.

-Set the Value 19 which is the C/N value to

apply for this example.

Interference analysis Network optimization

- To reduce the interference, the signals have to be synchronized in the largest area
possible.

- To do so, we assign Launch delays on stations in order to increase the time of arrival of
some transmitters and thereby minimize the ToA

- Use the Way button tool to analyze what delay values are needed for each station
- SFN interferences
- Keep the calculation parameters

- Example to reduce the interferences around Tx#3:

TOA negative means:

- TOAwanted>TOAunwanted

- The goal is to get 0<TOA<GI

-So, we have to add a delay on
the unwanted Tx
