Chapter 2:
Abundance, Asia, and Automation
Our society is shifting from a focus on L-
directed thinking to one of R-directed
thinking.

Reasons:

Abundance

Asia

Automation
Abundance

Powered by knowledge workers, the information

economy has produced a standard of living
unlike anything in the past (32).

Even though people have their basic needs met,

their life satisfaction have remained the same
People are craving transcendence (35).

Businesses must now produce not only a

product that is reasonably priced and functional,
but also beautiful, unique, and meaningful (33).
Asia
Technology Jobs $$$
Many L-directed American jobs are being shipped
overseas to Asia where workers earn much less
for the same job.

We are not all going to lose our jobs tomorrow.

Outsourcing is overhyped in the short term. But
it's underhyped in the long term.

The US workers need to do what workers abroad

cannot do equally well for much less money -
using R-Directed abilities.
Automation
TurboTax & EZ Divorce
Computer technology is able to duplicate
(quicker and cheaper) the process of many
L-directed jobs.

Any job that depends of routines - that can

be reduced to a set of rules, or broken
down into a set of repeatable steps
is at risk.
INTRODUCING THE
SIX SENSES
In the Conceptual Age, we will need to
complement our L-Directed reasoning by
mastering 6 essential R-Directed aptitudes(65.

1. Not just function but also DESIGN

2. Not just argument but also STORY
3. Not just focus but also SYMPHONY
4. Not just logic but also EMPATHY
5. Not just seriousness but also PLAY
6. Not just accumulation but also MEANING
Design
Not just function but also design
Design is a combination of utility and
significance. A graphic designer must
whip up a brochure that is easy to read.
Thats utility.
Her brochure must also transmit ides or
emotions or beauty that words
themselves cannot convey. Thats
significance.
Design
Not just function but also design
The typical person uses a toaster at most 15 min
per day. The remaining 1425 minutes of the day
the toaster is on display. In other words, 1% of
the toasters time is devoted to utility, while
99% is devoted to significance. Why shouldnt it
be beautiful?
way to survive is to constantly developing new
innovations, inventing new categories, and
giving the world something it didnt know it was
missing.
To be a designer is to be an agent of change.
Story
Not just arguments, but also story!
When facts become so widely available and
instantly accessible, each one becomes less
valuable. What begins to matter more is the
ability to place these facts in context and to
deliver them with emotional impact.
We are our stories. We compress years of
experience, thought, and emotion into a few
compact narratives that we convey to others
and tell ourselves.
Symphony
Not just focus, but also symphony
Symphony is the ability to put together the pieces. It
is the capacity to synthesize rather than to analyze;
to see relationships between seemingly unrelated
fields; to detect broad patterns rather than to deliver
specific answers; and to invent something new by
combining elements nobody else thought to pair.
Creativity generally involves crossing the boundaries
of domains. The most creative among us see
relationships the rest of us never notice.
It is seeing the big picture!
Symphony -Seeing the Big Picture

"The guy who invented the wheel was an

idiot. The guy who invented the other
three, he was a genius."
Empathy
Not just logic, but also empathy
Empathy is the ability to imagine yourself in
someone elses position and intuit what that
person is feeling. It is the ability to stand in
others shoes, to see with their eyes, and to
feel with their hearts.
Realizing a common mans happiness and
sorrow brings pragmatic actions out of us, and
that is the beginning of creativity.
Empathy

Which instruction would YOU respond to?

Example 1
1) Study 3 Hours at home.
2) Life is a continuous journey. Enjoy learning at
home for 3 hours a day also.

Example 2
1) Please minimize mobile usage.
2) Our children watch us. Please minimize
mobile usage at home.
Play
Not just seriousness, but also play.
There are evidences of enormous health and
professional benefits of laughter, lightheartedness,
games and humor.
Humor is a sophisticated form of intelligence that
cant be replicated by computers and that is
becoming increasingly valuable in a high-concept,
high-touch world.
Play will be to the 21st century what work was to
the last 300 years of industrial society our
dominant way of knowing, doing and creating
value.
Meaning
Not just accumulation, but also meaning.
Mans main concern is not to gain pleasure or to
avoid pain but to see a meaning in life.
The search for meaning is a drive that exists in all of
us and a combination of external circumstances
and internal will can bring it to the surface.
What is the meaning of my attending a college?
What is the meaning of marriage? Society? Life??...
Whats my relation with others? With universe? What
should I leave behind?
This thinking process brings us out from a
mechanical life towards creativity and innovation!

AFTERWORD

1. Can someone overseas do it cheaper?

2. Can a computer do it faster?

transcendent desires of an abundant age?

These three questions will mark the fault line

between who gets ahead and who gets left
behind.
