Pre-requisites for selection of route
Shortest possible pipeline route.
Avoiding hilly and highly undulated / broken areas.
Avoiding perennially marshy and water logged/ flood prone
areas.
Avoiding reserve forest & wild life sanctuaries.
Passage through forest area should be minimum otherwise it
should be avoided as far as possible.
Avoiding mining areas.
Avoiding densely populated area and city limits.

To keep crossing of Rail, Road, river & canal crossings to the
barest minimum and at right angle to the pipeline.
Small brief of the desktop study of proposed alternate
routes marked on SOI map along with key map and other
observations prepared

Final alignment is fixed considering the following:
A shortest possible route connecting originating, intermediate & terminal
locations.
As far as practicable easy approachability & accessibility during operation and
maintenance stage of pipeline.
Able to preserve ecological balance and to avoid/minimize environmental
degradation, the route shall be kept clear of forests as for as practicable.
To avoid populated areas, from public safety point of view.
To keep the Rail, Road, river & canal crossings to the barest minimum.
To avoid hilly or rocky terrain as far as practicable.
To avoid pipeline route running parallel to high voltage transmission lines/D.C.
circuits.
To utilize existing ROW, if any, as far as possible.
To avoid other obstacle such as wells, farm houses, orchards, lakes, ponds etc.
The length of pipeline at the river & watercourse crossings locations to be
minimum as far as practicable.

Reconnaissance Survey
Firmed up route is marked on the GTS (Great Trigonometric Survey) map.
Length of the pipeline computed and final report covering submitted for consideration of the project
design.
Pipeline route, plotted on the map of Survey of India (scale 1:50,000).
List of the Road, Rail, River, canal and minor watercourse crossings.
Indication of rocky area if any, where rock blasting may or may not be necessary.
Estimated cost of land required for pump stations/terminals and estimated amount of compensation
for the acquisition of ROU.
Major ground control points established and documented for easy identification of the route at a
later date for Detailed Engineering Survey. These ground control points are so chosen and spaced
that no difficulty is faced for identifying them and the same should be sufficient to mark the pipeline
route on ground as per the surveyed route during detailed Engineering Survey.

Based on above feed back comparative advantages/disadvantages of various alternatives shall be


studied by project group vis a vis technical feasibility and final route shall be selected.

Category wise list of crossings w,r,t, construction methodology i.e. cased crossings, open cut
crossings, submerged crossings or crossings by H.D.D. shall be prepared by project group.
