ORGANIC

MATERIALS
ORGANIC MATERIALS
Organic materials are substances in the soil that
were once alive. Dead plants, animals, bacteria and
fungi are all examples of organic material. Organic
material is distinguished from organic matter by the
amount of decomposition that has taken place.
Organic matter has decomposed as much as it can.
What are organic materials?

Organic materials originate from plants and

animals. While diverse in nature, they all
contain organic matter (carbon based
compounds). It is the organic matter and
nutrients that lead to the useful products
(compost, biogas, digestant, etc.) derived
from these materials.
What are organic materials?
Ex:
wood, paper, textiles and animal parts.
Organic materials are any type of materials
that are found in nature or are made out of
items that are found in nature. Organic
materials are composed solely of organic
compounds.
CHARACTERISTICS OF
ORGANIC MATERIALS
LIGHT WEIGHT
COMBUSTIBLE
SOFT
DUCTILE
NOT DIMENSIONALLY STABLE
POOR CONDUCTORS OF HEAT ELECTRICITY
POOR RESISTANCE TO TEMPERATURE
SOME TYPES OF
ORGANIC MATERIALS
WOODS

-Wood is a porous and fibrous structural tissue found in the

stems and roots of trees and other woody plants.
TEXTILES

-is a flexible material

consisting of a
network of natural or
artificialfibres(yarn
orthread).
PAPER

-is a thin material produced by pressing together moistfibresof

cellulosepulp derived fromwood, ragsorgrasses, and drying them into
flexible sheets.
RUBBER
as initially produced, consists
ofpolymersof the
organic compoundisoprene,
with minor impurities of other
organic compounds, plus
water.
COMPOST
Compost is organic matter that
has been decomposed and
recycled as a fertilizer and soil
amendment. Compost is a key
ingredient in organic farming
ORGANIC VS. INORGANIC
Types of Organic Materials

YardTrimmings
Yard trimmings are vegetative residuals resulting from the care
and maintenance of lawns and gardens. These materials include
leaves, grass clippings, garden debris, holiday trees, and
pruning from trees and shrubs.
Soil or sod and tree debris such as large branches and stumps
are often not considered yard trimmings because they are
typically reused or recycled separately from other organic
materials.
Types of Organic Materials

FoodScraps
Food scraps includes raw or cooked food materials
that are not used for human consumption, including
food loss before, during or after meal preparation in
the household as well as food discarded from retail
sales and food services.
Sources of food scrap generation:
Household
lack of knowledge of how to use food efficiently (use of leftovers, etc.)

planning issues when shopping

confusion over food labeling and how long foods are edible

portion sizing - making excess food at meals

suboptimal storage - storing in poorly sealed containers or at temperatures that are too
high
preferences - discarding edible portions (potato skins, pizza crusts, etc.), lack of desire to
consume leftovers
socio-economic factors - single person households and young people generate more food
scraps
Fertilizer
orfertiliser(British English;
see spelling differences) is any
material of natural or synthetic
origin (other than
liming materials) that is applied
to soils or to plant tissues
(usually leaves) to supply one or
moreplant nutrientsessential
to the growth ofplants.
Fertilizer
This maintains the soil fertility, so the farmer
can continue to grow nutritious crops and
healthy crops. Farmers turn
tofertilizersbecause these substances
contain plant nutrients such as nitrogen,
phosphorus, and potassium.
Liquid vs solid

Fertilizers are applied to crops both as solids and as liquid. About 90% of fertilizers

are applied as solids. Solid fertilizer is typically granulated or powdered. Often

solids are available asprills, a solid globule. Liquid fertilizers comprise
Soil
anhydrous ammonia, aqueous solutions of ammonia, aqueous solutions of
ammonium nitrate or urea. These concentrated products may be diluted with water
to form a concentrated liquid fertilizer (e.g.,UAN). Advantages of liquid fertilizer
are its more rapid effect and easier coverage.[1]The addition of fertilizer to
irrigation water is called "fertigation.
2 TYPES OF FERTILIZER
1. Organic fertilizer or natural fertilizer
is fertilizer made of decayed plants and animal
waste.
2.Inorganic fertilizer or artificial fertilizer
consists of commercially prepared fertilizers such as
ammonium sulfate, superphosphate and muriate of
potash.
Organic Fertilizers:
1.Animal Manure -contains much organic materials
valuable to the growth of crops. It should be dried before it
is applied to the soil as fertilizers.
2.Green Manure- planting leguminous crops over the
areas and when they bear flowers, they are plowed and left
to the soil until they decompose and become fertilizers for
the crops.
3.Composting -the process of changing plant and animal
waste into the simplest organic materials used as fertilizer.
Soil

Soil is a mixture of
minerals, organic
matter, gases, liquids,
and countless
organisms that together
support life on Earth.
Resin
In polymer chemistry and
materials science, resin is
a "solid or highly viscous
substance" of plant or
synthetic origin that is
typically convertible into
polymers. They are often
mixtures of organic
compounds, principally
terpenes.
