WORLDS ENERGY

CONSUMPTION
AND
SOURCES OF ENERGY
World energy consumption
-total energy used by all human civilization.
Sources of Energy
-energy comes from.

* Kinds of Energy Sources

Renewable energy source

- unlimited amount or not appreciably diminished.
Nonrenewable energy source
finite and exhaustible.
Renewable Energy Sources

*Water energy
the use of water to generate electricity.

Hydroelectric power
energy from the running water
turn the turbines to produce
electricity.
Tidal power
- use of ocean tides to produce electricity.
*Solar energy
use of solar cell
*Wind energy
use of windmill with large turbines to take available wind as
the power to turn the turbine that can then turn the generator to
produce electricity.
*Geothermal energy
comes from the internal heat of the earth.
Nonrenewable Energy Sources

*Fossil fuels from plants and animals decay.

- contains solar energy preserve from past geologic ages.

Coal decay of plants and is originated from

plants.
- Coal is first milled to a fine powder, which
increases the surface area and allows it to burn more
quickly. The powdered coal is blown into the combustion
chamber of a boiler where it is burnt at high temperature.
The hot gases and heat energy produced converts water
in tubes lining the boiler into steam. The high pressure
steam is passed into a turbine containing thousands of
propeller-like blades. The steam pushes these blades
causing the turbine shaft to rotate at high speed. A
generator is mounted at one end of the turbine shaft and
consists of carefully wound wire coils. Electricity is
generated when these are rapidly rotated in a strong
magnetic field. After passing through the turbine, the
steam is condensed and returned to the boiler to be
heated once again.
Petroleum and Natural Gas hydrocarbons found in nature within the
fractures of rocks.
-result of the decay of marine organism.
3 Technologies Used to Convert Oil into Electricity

1. Conventional steam oil is burned to heat water to create steam to generate

electricity.
2. Combustion turbine oil is burned under pressure to produce hot exhaust gases
which spin a turbine to generate electricity.
3. Combined-cycle technology - oil is first combusted in a combustion turbine, using
the heated exhaust gases to generate electricity
*Nuclear energy
generated by the controlled fission of Uranium-235 known as nuclear reactor. The
fission is produce by bombarding the uranium in a fuel rod with neutrons. As a result of the
splitting of uranium nucleus into isotopes of other element ,a small mass is converted to heat
energy which is use to drive steam turbines that generate electricity.
