Four Stages of Team Development
Like any organism, a team evolves
from early to mature stages.
The evolution covers four stages:
* Forming
* Storming
* Norming
* Performing
Forming:
Team members do not
know one another well.
They are wary of each
other.
Communication is limited.
They prefer safe comments.
They tend to be obedient
and want to be told what to
do.
Your role as the team leader:
Empower the members and assist
them.
Offer guidance and set directions
for the task.
Solicit the ideas and views by
asking open-ended questions
instead of yes or no. Appreciate
them.
Storming:
The group members feel
more comfortable.
They start expressing their
opinions.
They begin to explore their
power.
Arguments,
misunderstanding,
counterproposals,
frustration are indicators of
this stage.
Challenges often arise.
This is an essential stage in team development.
Team that never storm are passive and less
creative.

Your role as team leader

you should remain objective.
Help the group clarify the nature of the conflict
and resolve the conflict.
Keep reminding yourself not to take conflict
personally.
Norming:
The team members begin to
establish procedures for
handling decisions, crisis,
conflicts and approaches
to the task.
They begin to accept that
difference of opinion is
inevitable and a positive
attribute.
This is also the trust building
stage.
Your role as the team leader:
Continue the activities that
create trust.
Empower team members.
Provide a vision of the team
and help build skills in decision
making and conflict
management.
Performing:
The team utilizes its combined
strengths to optimize team
performance using their new
understanding of each other.

The team has learned how to

be a team, has defined its
task, has worked out its
relationships, and has aligned
itself toward producing
results.

This is the harvesting stage.

Your role at this stage:
Keep vigilant.
Continue to remain alert to the
teams needs for further
improvement in skills and attitudes.
The team might react to changes
in its tasks, its membership or its
environment.
Team Building and Maintenance Roles of the
Leader

Encourager: Support/accept/appreciate
another members idea or
statement.
Harmonizer: Resolve conflict and reduce
tension.
Compromiser: Attempt to come up with ideas
that will please the members.
Gate keeper: Open the channels of
communication and promote
participation.

Standard setter: Express standards for the group to

achieve/apply standards in
evaluating the groups proposes.

Group Observer: Evaluate the mood of the group.

The leader should avoid the following self-
centered roles:
Aggressor attacking other members.
Blocker Opposing all ideas and
refusing to cooperate.
Recognition Seeker- boasting about own
accomplishments- It
was my idea, I did
it.
A leader is best
When people barely know that he exists
Not so good when people obey and acclaim him
Worst when they despise him.
Fail to honour people,
They fail to honour you:
But of a good leader, who talks little,
When his work is done, his aim fulfilled,
They will all say, We did this ourselves.
