Concrete Technology
DESIGN OF THE CONCRETE MIXTURE
OBJECTIVE: To determine the proportion of the
ingredients
that will produce concrete of the proper
workability when fresh and the desired
durability and strength after it has
hardened.
PRINCIPAL FACTORS IN CONCRETE MIX DESIGN
1. Requirement as to placing
2. Interrelations of cement content, water-cement ratio
and gradation of aggregate.
3. Required strength.
4. Quality of concrete necessary to satisfy the
conditions of exposure.
5. Considerations of economy.
STEPS TO FOLLOW IN CONCRETE MIX DESIGN

1. Choice of slump
2. Choice of maximum size aggregate
3. Estimate amount of mixing water and water content
4. Select water-cement ratio
5. Calculate cement content
6. Calculate quantity of fine and coarse aggregates
7. Adjust for moisture content of aggregates
8. Check calculated mixture proportions by preparing and
testing trial batches
Slump Test ( ASTM C-143)

A sample of freshly mixed concrete is placed and

compacted by rodding in a mold shaped as the frustrum of
a cone. The mold is raised, and the concrete allowed to
subside. The distance between the original and displaced
position of the center of the top surface of the concrete is
measured and reported as the SLUMP of the concrete.

Apparatus
mold
tamping rod round straight steel
5/8 in diameter and approx. 24 in length
Procedure
1. Dampen the mold and place it on a flat, moist, non
absorbent (rigid) surface. Immediately fill the mold on
three layers, each approx. One third the volume of the
mold.
2. Rod each layer with 25 strokes per layer. If the rodding
operation of top layer results in subsidence of the
concrete below the top edge of the mold, add
additional concrete to keep an excess of concrete
aboe the top of the mold at all times.
3. Strike off surface of the concrete by screening and
rolling motion of the tamping rod.
4. Remove the mold imemdiately from the concrete by
raising it carefully in a vertical direction.
5. Complete the entire test from the start of filling through
removal of the mold wothout interruption and complete
within an elapsed time of 2 min.

Measure the slump by determining teh vertical

difference between the top of the mold and the displaced
center the top surface of the specimen.

FLEXURAL STRENGTH OF CONCRETE
(Using Simple Beam with Third-Point Loading)

the middle third of the span length.

R = PI
bd
Where:
R = modulus of rupture, psi or MPa
P = maximum applied load indicated by the
testing
machine, lbf or N
I = span length, in or mm
d = average depth of specimen, in or mm
If the fracture occurs in the tension surface outside of the
middle third of the span length by not more than 5% of the
span length.
R = 3Pa

Where:
a = average distance between line of fracture and
the nearest support measured in the tension
surface of the beam, in or mm

If the fracture occurs in the tension surface outside of the

middle third of the span length by more than 5% of the
span length, discard the results of the test.

No. 42
Series of 2006

SUBJECT: Amendment to Department Order No. 71, Series

203, Relative to the Limits of Assignment of Accredited
Materials Engineers of the Contractors and Consultants
___________________________________________________________________
Inasmuch as there are already sufficient number of accredited Materials
Engineers to be assigned by Contractors and Consultants to supervise a wider
coverage of projects being implemented by the DPWH, Department Order No.
71, Series of 2003 is hereby further amended as follows:

Starting January, 2007, only accredited materials engineers may be assigned to

DPWH projects, subject to the following limits of assignment.

CLASSIFICATION RANK LIMITS OF ASSIGNMENT

Materials Engineer II One (1) project, no cost limit or

CLASSIFICATION RANK LIMITS OF ASSIGNMENT

Materials Engineer II One (1) project, no cost limit or

Two (2) projects located within the same

province with an aggregate cost of
P10Million but not more than P 30Million

Materials Engineer i One (1) project costing not more than

P 100 Million or

Three (3) projects located within the

same province with an aggregate cost
of P 1 Million but not more than P3 Million

Likewise, contractors may assign a non-accredited materials engineer to every

DPWH project costing below P1 Million.

Except for the above amendments, the other provisions of Department Order
No. 184, Series of 1999 and Department Order No. 71, Series of 2003, shall

DEPARTMENT ORDER
No. 211
Series of 2000

SUBJECT: CONCRETE POURING PERMIT

---------------------------------------------------------------------
----------------------------

It has been observed that in many DPWH projects, the basic requirement of a
permit for concrete pouring has oftentimes been neglected by the contractors.
As a result, defects/deficiencies arising from the concerned Project Engineer
not being able to check that the proper preparations and procedures are taken,
occur frequently.

Henceforth, in order to ensure that all concreting works are done in

accordance with the approved plans and specification, it is hereby directed
that no contractor shall start any concreting without a pouring permit duly
approved and issued by the concerned Project Engineer.
All pouring requests shall be approved only after the Project Engineer has
checked and ascertained that the necessary preparations and procedures have
been taken in accordance with the approved plans and specifications using
the attached standard Pouring Permit Form.

For strict compliance.

SUBJECT: Instructions on the Use of Admixture in Concrete Mix

and Hydrated Lime Aside from Mineral Filler in
Bituminous Mix

____________________________________________________________________

It has been observed that there are some suppliers of concrete mix for DPWH
projects who are using admixtures to accelerate the time of setting and early
strength development of concrete without prior approval from DPWH and
without the necessary change order. As a result, there are cases wherein the
minimum cement requirement per approved design mix and as spelled out
under the DPWH Standard Specifications is reduced during batching operation.
The practice affects the durability of concrete and oftentimes causes the
premature cracking of concrete pavement due to lower cement content in the
mix.
Although the use of admixtures is allowed under the DPWH Standard
Specifications, it has to be stressed that the material is added only to the mix
to produce some desired modifications to the properties of the concrete where
necessary, but not as partial replacement of cement.

Similarly, there are some asphalt suppliers of bituminous mix for DPWH
projects who are not using the required hydrated lime aside from mineral filler
as stipulated under the DPHW Standard Specifications. The practice also
affects the stability of the mix and oftentimes causes the premature cracking
of asphalt pavement.

Henceforth, it is hereby directed that admixtures shall be used only in

concrete mix at controlled proportion after it has satisfactorily passed the
corresponding specification and as permitted by the approving authority. In
no case should the material be used as partial replacement of cement.
Likewise, the use of hydrated lime in asphalt mix under Section 310.2.4 of the
1995 DPWH Standard Specifications should be strictly enforced.

Additionally, all concrete and asphalt suppliers shall be required to comply

strictly with the approved design mix and job mix during concrete and
asphalt batching operations, respectively.
Further, all heads of implementing offices are also directed to strictly monitor
compliance of concrete and asphalt suppliers to these instructions.

This order takes effect immediately.
