Vision

Helen Keller was asked; is

there anything worse than
losing your sight?
Yes, she replied, losing
your vision
Vision

A clear, comprehensive photograph of

an organization at some point in the
future. It provides direction because it
describes what the organization needs
to be like, to be successful within the
future

The Dream
Vision

having clear and compelling vision

statements can:
Draw people to common work
Give hope for a better future

Inspire community members to realize their

dreams through positive, effective action
Provide a basis for developing the other aspects
of your action planning process: your mission,
objectives, strategies, and action plans
Mission

Facebook was not originally

created to be a company. It was
built to accomplish a social
mission - to make the world more
open and connected.
~ Mark Zuckerberg
Mission

A mission is a statement which defines the

role that an organization plays in a society. A
higher calling or meaning, a reason for
being. Often this is the reason the
organization was first created to fill a need
in the marketplace or society.

The What and the Why

Mission

The mission should answer three key

questions:
What is it that we do?

How do we do it?

For whom are we doing it?

Mission

Having a clear mission statement can:

Convert the broad dreams of your vision into
more specific, action-oriented terms
Explain your goals to interested parties in a clear
and concise manner
Enhance your organization's image as being
competent and professional, thus reassuring
funding sources that their investment was a
smart choice
Goals

Goals are an expected or

desired outcome of a
planning process. Goals are
usually broad, general
expressions of the guiding
principles and aspirations of
a community.
Goals

Setting goals would help you

have:
Direction
Internal Coordination
Motivation
Facilitate Planning
Objectives

Objectives are precise targets

that are necessary to achieve
goals. Objectives are detailed
statements of quantitatively
or qualitatively measurable
results the plan hopes to
accomplish.
Objectives

Objectives has the following benefits

to the organization:
Direction
Coordination
They form standards
Motivation
Action Plans

An action plan is a document

that lists what steps must be
taken in order to achieve a
specific goal.
Action Plans

The purpose of an action plan is to

clarify what resources are required
to reach the goal, formulate a
timeline for when specific tasks
need to be completed and
determine what resources are
required.
The Importance of VMGO in General

The VMGO process grounds your dreams. It

makes good ideas possible by laying out what
needs to happen in order to achieve your
vision.
By creating this process in a group effort
(taking care to involve both people affected by
the problem and those with the abilities to
change it), it allows your organization to build
consensus around your focus and the
necessary steps your organization should
take.
The Importance of VMGO in General

The process gives you an opportunity to develop your

vision and mission together with those in the
community who will be affected by what you do. That
means that your work is much more likely to address
the communitys real needs and desires, rather than
what you think they might be. It also means
community ownership of the vision and mission,
putting everyone on the same page and greatly
increasing the chances that any effort will be
successful.
VMGO allows your organization to focus on your
short-term goals while keeping sight of your long-term
vision and mission.
Process on Developing VGMOs and Action Plans

1. Convene a planning group made up of

individuals from the community affected by
the problem or issue and others who are in
a position to address it. Identify additional
partners and invite them into your strategic
planning process.
2. Describe the vision for the community or
initiative (their dreams for how things
should be).
Process on Developing VGMOs and Action Plans

3. State the mission (the what and why).

4. State the objectives (how much of what the
group hopes to accomplish by when).
5. Identify the strategies (how things will be
accomplished).
6. Develop (or refine) the action plan by
stating the specific community/system
changes to be sought that will result in the
accomplishment of your goals and
objectives
Process on Developing VGMOs and Action Plans

7. Identify action steps for one key

community/system change in the action
plan (who is going to do what by when).
8. Evaluate critically the appropriateness of
the action plan (i.e., the activities or
community/system changes to be
implemented).
9. Indicate how you will use the strategic and
action plans.
