Properties and Surface Area and

Volume of 3-dimensional Objects

PREPARED BY: BEN JUSTINE DUMLAO

What is a 3-D Shape?
This is a cube

height

length

It has 3 dimensions length, height and width.

All 3-D shapes are solids.

A Cube
Edge a line
where two faces
Face the flat surface
meet
of a 3-D shape

A cube has: 6 faces Vertex (vertices) the point

8 vertices where three or more faces meet
(corner)
12 edges
Rectangular Prism
Key Feature
Six faces which are all rectangles.
Faces 6
Vertices 8

CUBE

Surface Area of Cube: 6 a2

Number of Faces=6
Area of each face= Side X
Side = a x a
= a2
Total Area= 6(a2)
Volume of Cube: Length3

Volume= Length x Width x

Height

As the length, width and

height are
all equal hence

Volume= L3
Example
Let a cube have a side measuring 2 cm. Find its area as well as
volume.

Side=2 cm
Surface area= 6a2
= 6(2 X 2)
=6x4
Surface Area= 24 cm2

2 cm
Volume = length3
2 cm
=2X2X2
= 8 cm3
Rectangular Prism
Surface Area of Cuboid: 2(lb + bh + lh)

Number of Rectangle=6
Area of each rectangle = length x width + length x width
+ length x height + length x height + width x height +
width x height
Total Surface Area= 2 (lb + bh + lh)
Example
Let the dimensions of a cuboid be as follows- l=1 cm, b=2 cm, h=3 cm.
Find the total surface area and volume.

Surface Area=2(lb+bh+lh)
= 2(1x2 + 2x3 + 1x3)
= 2(2 + 6 + 3)
= 2(11) 1 cm

cm

= 22 cm2
Volume= length x width x height
=1x2x3
= 6 cm3
