In an unfortunate turn of events last year

at the Boston Marathon a bomb was set

off at the finish line
Boston, Ma will never be the same like
the town of Sam Dent
Rehabilitation for the those effected by
the crash dictated the future of the town
 There are many different places for the
many different types of Rehab
Today in the New England area the most
well known and respected center for
rehabilitation for amputees is Spaulding
Nichole Burnell had to work with her local
hospital
 There are many different types of
Rehabilitation such as:
Physical
Mental
Drug
Alcohol
Etc.
 In The Sweet Hereafter Nichole Burnell
became handicap from the accident
and had to go to rehab to learn to live
her life as normally as she could.
Nichole had to learn to use her upper
body to move herself instead of her legs
as well as how to do simple tasks like
getting in and out of a bath safely
 There are many different parts that go
into Rehabilitation like:
Physical Therapy
Occupational Therapy
Message
Physiological
 Physical Therapy (PT) is an important part
of many doctors orders in a patients
recovery plan
PT helps to strengthen your muscles
Nichole had to go through intensive PT
going through hours of pain to simply be
able to go to the bathroom with out help
 While Physical Therapy makes you able
to do what your Doctor wants you to be
able to do OT(occupational therapy)
helps you do the things you want to do
This is not mentioned in the Sweet
Hereafter but is a huge part in the Rehab
process to help the patients self worth to
help them do what theyve always done
 After an intense Pt session Message
therapy helps to relieve soreness after
working the muscles
Message Therapy is helpful for the mind
and body giving time to relax and
release tension
Nichole first refused this type of therapy
until they gave her a female therapist as
she felt uncomfortable with a male due
to her fathers abuse
 Nichole had a unimaginable sudden
change in her life taking a large effect
on her mental health
Physiological treatment was still looked
down upon in the time period this book
was written but Nichole would eventually
need to see a Psychologist to help her
go through the many emotional feelings
she had and will have for the rest of her
life due the accident and her injury
 In the End Nichole was able to move as
best she could and came back to help
the town after
In a few weeks the gun will go off
signaling the start if the Boston Marathon
like Sam Dent we all settle into knowing
life must go on
