Uninterruptible Power Supply

(UPS)
UPS is a device that provides battery
backup when the electrical power fails or
drops to an unacceptable voltage level.
TYPES OF UPS
1. OFF LINE UPS 2 . LINE INTERACTIVE UPS 3. ONLINE UPS

OFFLINE UPS
Hear incoming mains supply directly
through to the output usually through
a relay contact The UPS switches
on its inverter as soon as mains supply
failure is detected the output relay
change to the inverter side to supply
battery sourced power to the load.

LINE INTERACTIVE UPS

Hear the inverter plays a dual
role of charging the battery
when mains supply is present
as well as regulating the output
voltage and working as a normal
inverter in absence of mains
Supply.
3. ONLINE UPS
Hear double conversion technology used First AC to DC and then DC to AC to the output.
When the utility blacks out, the battery starts to supply to the DC portion instead of
the rectifier. As the output power is constantly generated by the inverter, it's output
waveform is the most perfect of all. So these are suitable for use by any application
that demands high quality electrical supply.
Current Trends in ONLINE UPS Technology
1. THIRED LAVEL INVERTER TECHONOLOGY
ADVANTAGES 1. The three phases share a common DC-bus minimizing the capacitance
requirements. 2. The DC-link capacitors can be pre-charged, as a group. 3. High efficiency for
fundamental frequency switching.
DISADVANTAGES 1. Increased number of clamping diodes. 2. Neutral point control for balanced
voltages across the DC-link capacitors should be achieved for all conditions of operation.
2. DSP CONTROLLER TECHONOLOGY
A DSP controller provides an improved and cost-effective solution for UPS design, with high
performance. It replaces of bulky transformers, relays, and mechanical bypass switches with
smaller, more intelligent functional equivalents. It gives increased power efficiency, and power
density. Plus it is compact and light.
The DSP has integrated functions selected for sophisticated embedded controls, in UPS
applications. Except for signal conditioning and actuators that provide the interface between the
DSP and the power circuitry, with DSP all the control implementations are digital.
DSP implementation has fewer parts, increased reliability and a greater immunity to noise. The
DSP feedback and control loops are implemented digitally so there is no need for compensation
for component tolerance. In short, DSP technology provides a cost-effective alternative to
control multiple power converters, and meets the demands of advanced power topologies
3. MODULER UPS
Unlike traditional standalone UPS, the connected load of a modular UPS will remain unaffected
by a major fault. If a power module fails, the redundant module takes over and you simply
replace the faulty module with out down time or a loss of UPS back up. If a battery module fails
the only consequence is a slight reduction in the back up time available until the faulty module is
replaced with a new one. The resilience of the modular design removes the potential for a single
point of failure that you have with a traditional standalone UPS and provides the highest level of
reliability and availability.
