Backwards Planning From

Major Assessments
Objectives:
TWBAT evaluate a major assessment for rigor and content in
order to ensure that scholars can meet the requirements of the
assessment.
TWBAT plan scaffolded supports, benchmarks, and formative
assessments into their unit plan and/or scope and sequence in
order to ensure scholars are successful on the major
assessment.
Fine Arts and PE Teachers will be able to tweak/develop a unit
1 project and build a scaffolded plan (stage 3) in order for
scholars to be successful on the project.

If you were to plan a trip (to anywhere you wanted!) write
down the steps you would take to ensure you have a successful
and enjoyable trip

success on a major assessment?
Steps to Backwards Planning:
STEP 1: Get familiar with assessment
Set-up
Content tested
Skills tested
Rigor of assessment
STEP 1.5: If familiar with assessment, think about the misconceptions
your scholars had last year and how you can remediate those this year.
If you are new to the assessment, think about the pieces that will be
most difficult to teach and what you can do to prepare.

Steps to Backwards Planning:
STEP 2: Pull up your scope and sequence in order
to plan in scaffolded supports, benchmarks, and
formative assessments aligned to the major
assessment. Write in specific supports and
activities.

15 minutes for Step 2


Steps to Backwards Planning
STEP 3: Pull up the unit 1 assessment posted by your CTL.
Think about how you could tweak it to better align to the
major assessment or how you could scaffold your instruction
(stage 3) to ensure scholar success on both the unit 1
assessment and the major assessment.
Start tweaking the assessment OR start adding in
scaffolding in stage 3 with differentiation
