Imagine-se o leitor sozinho, rodeado apenas de seu equipamento, numa praia tropical prxima a uma
aldeia nativa, vendo a lancha ou o barco que o trouxe afastar-se no mar at desaparecer de vista. Tendo
encontrado um lugar para morar no alojamento de algum homem branco negociante ou missionrio
voc nada tem para fazer a no ser iniciar imediatamente seu trabalho etnogrfico. Suponhamos, alm
disso, que voc seja apenas um principiante, sem nenhuma experincia, sem roteiro e sem ningum que o
possa auxiliar pois o homem branco est temporariamente ausente ou, ento, no se dispe a perder
tempo com voc. Isso descreve exatamente minha iniciao na pesquisa de campo, no litoral sul da Nova
Guin. (MALINOWSKI, 1978, p. 19)
Imagine yourself suddenly set down surrounded by all your gear, alone on a tropical beach close to a native
village, while the launch or dinghy which has brought you sails away out of sight. Since you take up your
abode in the compound of some neighbouring white man, trader or missionary, you have nothing to do,
but to start at once on your ethnographic work. Imagine further that you are a beginner, without previous
experience, with nothing to guide you and no one to help you. For the white man is temporarily absent, or
else unable or unwilling to waste any of his time on you. This exactly describes my first initiation into field
work on the south coast of New Guinea. (MALINOWSKI, 2005 [1922], p. 3)

Uma vez que, tradicionalmente, a pesquisa etnogrfica compreendida como uma descrio
densa de um saber nativo interpretado pelo pesquisador, que vai a campo e se deixa contaminar
pelo olhar do outro (GEERTZ, 2008 [1973]; HAMMERSLEY & ATKINSON, 2007), quais os desafios
de se desenvolver uma pesquisa etnogrfica na web?

Since ethnographic research is commonly understood as a thick description of a native

knowledge that is interpreted by the researcher, who goes to the field and allows himself to be
contaminated by the other (Geertz, 1973; Hamstersley & Atkinson, 2007), what are the
challenges of conducting ethnographic research on the web?
