ALNAv2.3 Training LR - ECYS23 - Issue 02 - For Training Purposes only ! - 9
Introduction ALNAv2 - General Function
Mobile OnAir
Enables passengers to use their GSM mobile phones inflight, after takeoff
and before landing. It works in the same way as roaming abroad with the
passenger being billed by their own home mobile operator. The airline
receives a share of the revenue generated.
Link OnAir
A range of satellite airtime packages options proposed by OnAir for IP
based communications. It covers cabin Internet and also enables wide
3rd party applications.

- The BTS controls the radio frequency resources within the OMTS and allows direct
communication between the mobile phones and the OMTS.
- The BTS establishes the communication pipe to the mobile phones and support all
necessary system features like radio access, power level control and frequency
configuration.
- The BTS is available in two different standards, for GSM1800 and 1900 MHz (America).
- The BTS is connected to the OBCE and HESU (via HES).
- All GSM services, including voice, SMS and GPRS, are provided through the BTS.
- The BTS needs to be calibrated every 24 month. Since ALNA 2.3 this is done
automatically.

The purpose of the OBCE within the OMTS is to control the radio frequency emissions of all
mobile phones and to prevent them from connecting to terrestrial networks.
In case of a System Fault or Service deactivation, the OBCE activates the PSU PAX signs
via CIDS.
The OBCE controls the RF-signal of up to 6 BTS.
The OBCE consists of these main components:
One noise generator module for each frequency band
CDMA/PDC/GSM: 420 / 460 / 800 / 850 / 900 (one combined module)
GSM: 1800
GSM: 1900
UMTS: 2100
UMTS: 2600
- internal RF-Combiner to combine the different noise signals and the GSM signals from the
connected BTS and to split the signals from the mobile phones to the connected BTS
(applicable also for the CWLU in Option D).
- One RF detector per frequency band to monitor the correct function of the radio frequency
emission
- A microcontroller group for device control

The RF-Combiner unit offers a number of RF ports (separated for transmission and reception) on the system side in
order to connect different RF systems
and two ports on the antenna side to support separated receiving and transmitting leaky line antennas.
The RF-Combiner is able to:
- Combine six WLAN radio frequency signals (three 2.4GHz and three 5GHz) and one already combined OMTS
signal (consisting of OBCE- and GSM- signals) on its system side ports and send the combined signal to its
transmitting (TX) port on the antenna side.
- Split a combined signal on its receiving (RX) antenna port and distribute it, according to the signal component
frequencies, to the connected units the system side.
The signal path for the OMTS system is passive, i.e. there are no active components processing the OMTS signal.

To transmit and receive the GSM- and WLAN-signals, a Leaky Line Antenna is
installed through the whole cabin.
The Leaky Line Antenna:
- radiates the Radio Frequency (RF) signals emitted by the CWLU,OBCE and
BTS
- provides a homogenous signal coverage over the whole cabin and a
- low emission electromagnetic field,
- Frequency-range from 400 MHz to 6 GHz,
- is connected to the OBCE or RF-Combiner (Option E only) via RF feeder cable.
Note: The Leaky Line Antenna emits only in a defined sector. It has to be aligned
to work properly. It is marked:

The Mobile Telephony Test is an End-to-End test. It establishes a GSM-connection from the A/C to
the public telephone network .
A Mobile Phone with an international Roaming contract is required for this Test.
The Mobile Phone has to be switched to manual network selection
and On Air has to be selected.
Before this test can be performed, the operator has to request a valid
Absolute Radio Frequency Channel Number (ARFCN) from OnAir.
ARFCN is a radio channel numbering scheme used to identify specific RF
channels in a cellular mobile radio system (range for GSM 1800: 512 885).
