Slums are found in various parts of the world but their nomenclature is not
uniform. In Kolkata they are known as bustees,in Mumbai, in Chennai cherrys
and in delhi, khatras.
Slum situation and clusters, like any other phenomenon,vary from country to
country mainly in details.
Due to urbanisation.
Poverty, overcrowding, insanitation and ill health, etc. are some of the common
but significant characteristics.

Scope
The scope of the study consists of what is slum, and its nature, causes, effects,
characteristic, problems faced by the society due to slums, the meaning of slum clearance,
slum improvement.

Keeping in view the nature of information and its availability, only those cities will be
covered which have updated database i.e. Census 2001, Biometric survey, studies and
projects undertaken by state governments for improvement for slums, housing projects for
urban poor, cities covered under programmes like MPUSP, APUSP and JNNURM (IHSDP &
BUSP)
Issues
According to census of India 2001, has adopted the definition of slum areas as fallows.
All areas notified as slum by state/local government and union territory administration

clearance and the main four objects of taking up slum clearance programmes can be

According to last census in 2001, the slum-dwelling population of India had
risen from 27.9 million in 1981 to 61.8 million in 2001.
Indian economy has achieved a significant growth of 8 percent annually in last
four years, but there is still large number of people nearly 1.1 billion.
According to Government sources, the Slum Population of India have exceeds
the population of Britain.

% of people living in slums in Urban areas: 14% (One in Seven).
% of notified slums: 51%.
%State with Highest number of slums: Maharashtra (32%).

There are a total of 1,454 slums across the GHMC limits. The draft plan states that as
per the 2001 census, Hyderabad City has a slum population of 19,80,347 out of the total
population of 55,11,046. This constitutes 35.9 per cent of the citys population living in
slums.
More than 9 lakh population lives in the 770 notified slums in HUA. Out of the 811
slums, 387 have been recognized as developed and are recommended for delisting.
