What is "organic cotton?"
Organic cotton is grown using methods and materials that have a low impact on
the environment. Organic production systems replenish and maintain soil
fertility, reduce the use of toxic and persistent pesticides and fertilizers, and
build biologically diverse agriculture. Third party certification organizations verify
that organic producers use only methods and materials allowed in organic
production. Organic cotton is grown without the use of toxic and persistent
pesticides and synthetic fertilizers. In addition, regulations prohibit the use of
genetically engineered seed for organic farming. All cotton sold as organic must
meet strict regulations covering how the cotton is grown.

GRS
RECYCLED CONTENT
FEDERAL TRADE COMMISSION DEFINITION

A recycled content claim may be made only for materials that have been
recovered or otherwise diverted from the solid waste stream, either during
the manufacturing process (pre-consumer), or after consumer use (post--
consumer)

Any express or implied claim about the specic pre-consumer or post-

consumer content of a product or package must be substantiated.

For products that are only partially made of recycled material the
percentage of recycled content in the product must be stated clearly to avoid
consumer deception about the mount of recycled content in the nished
product.
GRS
Why Recycle?
Recycling conserves non renewable resources by replacing the need
for primary extraction.
It is benecial both from an energy use and green house gas
emissions Perspective

Recycling should always come after reducing and reusing following

waste hierarchy principles
It is important to ensure integrity of the claims

Next steps should include

o Maximizing materials recovery
o Developing innovating garment to garment solution
GRS
Global Recycle Standard
The Global Recycled Standard is intended for companies that are making and/or selling
products with recycled content. The standard applies to the full supply chain and
addresses traceability, environmental principles, social requirements, and labeling.
Developed with the textile industry in mind, the GRS may also be applied to products
from any industry.
