Blood drawing, what do you need?
Blood drawing

Clinical labs are important in diseases diagnosis,
determination its severity and patient response to
specific treatment. Diagnosis of any disease is first
done by physical examination by physician and
confirmed by lab diagnostic tests.

Lab values are very important in determination of


disease severity, drug doses and in follow up.
Types of tubes

There are a lot of types of blood collecting


tubes but mainly we use
1- EDTA tubes
2-Na Citrate tubes
3-Serum / plain tubes
4- Heparin tubes
K3EDTA tube
At least 1 cc
Lavender, Purple, Pink EDTA
The EDTA anticoagulant in tubes with lavender or purple stopper helps remove
calcium by forming calcium salts. This draw is often used in hematology.

Shake
Serum plain tube
at least 1 cc
Gold or Red Gel with Clot Activator
Serum separator tube (SST) does not have any additive but a clot activator
that will separate blood from the serum by centrifugation. This draw is used
in chemistry, immunology and serology.

Patient name
and file number
Na Citrate tube

Light Blue Sodium Citrate


Coagulation tubes have light blue-colored stopper and a sodium citrate additive.
It is used for coagulation tests, requiring full draw.

Shake
2 cc 4 cc
Lithium Heparin tube
at least 2 cc

Green Heparin
Tubes with green tops have lithium heparin anticoagulant

Shake
Put the tube with its paper
in the biohazard bag
Put syringe in sharp needle container
Blood Culture
4 Gauzes
Specimen rejection criteria:

Specimen improperly labeled or unlabeled


Specimen improperly collected or preserved
Inadequate sample
Hemolyzed sample
Wrong tube
Electrocardiography

No metals on or attached to the patient.

Patient should lie on his back with his arms and legs
attached to each other.

Check the machine power.

Check the machine paper.

Patient exposed properly.


Hairy Chest?

Trim the hairs.

OR

Put gel on the electrodes.
