Objective: To Bring a Change in Society

/ Social World
Social entrepreneurs are a new breed of
entrepreneurs, who not only consider
material rewards but who address the social
and environmental issues of our time and
solve them.
Their business models address the root of
the issues but transform sectors, make
lasting changes on society and solve
problems that aid or governments have
not been able to address sufficiently.

SEVA caf started ten years ago with a group of
volunteers. The idea was to spread happiness and
sharing in society. Since then, they have not
done any major changes nor come up with any
major strategy change.

I would like to present what activities they are

doing to bring happiness and smiles to the
people who visit SEVA Caf and also those who
serve at the caf.
Protagonist: Jayesh Bhai

Active
Social members: Bhaskar Bhai,
Raju Bhai, and Jagat Bhai
Imagine ----------------walking into your local cafe
---------------- filling your basket with what you need,
---------------- Giving what you can financially, and
walking away with no formal exchange.
Manav Sadhana
In 1990, a team of young volunteers, mainly Jayeshbhai, his wife, Anar Patel,
and their noble friend, Viren Joshi, inspired by Gandhian values, began
gathering under the branches of a tree in the Gandhi Ashram.

Every Saturday to play with street children. They provided the children with a
nutritional meal and taught them about basic hygiene by cutting their nails
and bathing them.

This activity quickly came together into a full-time endeavor working to

brighten the future of underprivileged children. Under the guidance of Gujarat
Harijan Sevak Sangh, Safai Vidyalaya and Environmental Sanitation Institute
(ESI), Manav Sadhna was established and registered as a Public Charitable
Trust and the Society
Seva Cafe which serves 50 guests every day, is
driven by volunteers and operated by modest
staff, offers cooked food to the guest as a genuine
gift.
To complete the full circle of giving and sustain
this experiment, guests make contributions in
the spirit of pay-it-forward to those who will come
after them.
In the path of serving people and to maintain the
full circle of giving, the chain of giving must work
so that the cafe could sustain in long run and the
concept of giving.
Mr. Jignesh Patel (original name withheld) who doesnt believe

in the concept of gift economy.

Mr. Jignesh challenges the caf and started coming with his

friends and taking all the benefits for almost two and a half

months without showing any generosity and offering any

contribution in the form of volunteers or any kind.

This particular event broke the chain of giving. Therefore it did

not help them to run the cafe in a sustainable manner as the

contribution in the spirit of pay-it-forward is less than the

serving the guests every day.

Bhaskar Bhai, Raju Bhai, and Jagat Bhai were
surprised to see that Mr. Jignesh is coming to the cafe
very frequently along with more number of friends than
before.

Somehow, they were maintaining the cafe with the

contribution made by the other guests and generous
people who were believing in the concept of Seva.

But after, two and a half months of experiences with

Mr. Jignesh, they were thinking about the cafe and its
future.
They went to discuss this issue with Jayesh
Bhai and asked: What should they do in this
situation as it is becoming difficult for
sustaining the Seva Cafe?.

Then Jayesh Bhai said, we are running the

caf for a social cause, hence we have to run
the business for the sake of society.
