Workshop #2: Analysis of a 2 gap
solenoid
A DC solenoid consists of a coil wrapped
around a permeable U shaped body
and an armature. An analysis is
performed to determine forces acting on Air gap
both the body and the armature.

The default cushion of 30
mm will suffice but you may 3
increase it to 50 mm if you
wish. 1

VERY IMPORTANT! Change

Merge Parts field to yes,
otherwise the model will not
solve (you will get an
invalid geometry message
when attempting to do so).

Create a contour plot of the
x component forces acting
on the poles and back_bar
and note the total (-143.5 N).
Discrepancy between this
value and that for the keeper
may be due to (1)
discretization and (2) force
acting on the coil which
cannot be accounted for in
this analysis. 1

We expect that:
Fkeeper + Fpoles + Fcoil = 0

Tip: By default, the ANSYS
files created during the
solution process are NOT 1
saved. It may be useful to
save them so that operations
not available in Simulation
may be performed using
ANSYS. For example, in
ANSYS, a closed path around
the magnetic circuit may be
used to calculate
2
magnetomotive force (MMF)
to serve as a check on the
specified coil current Ni:

________________ SUMMARY OF MMF CALCULATION____________________

MMF = 5028.05354 Ampere Check: Ni = (1000t)(5A) = 5000 A-t

NOTE:
