EDITORIAL OF
INFORMATION
This type makes the reader well-
informed. It also enlightens the
readers on the implication of a
significant event or an issue so that
they may form an opinion that reflects
a broad understanding of the school,
community and country.
EXAMPLE OF EDITORIAL OF
INFORMATION

The spread of AIDS in Asia is not

simply due to women and children
dispensing sexual favors freely or due to
the changing lifestyles but because of
the globalization of travel, the
unscrupulousness of flesh trade
merchants and the specter of poverty
and powerlessness haunting women and
children.
EXAMPLE OF EDITORIAL OF
INFORMATION

The high literacy rate in the Philippines

is not an indicator that the country is
making a headway in educating its
populace for the statistics fails to impact
on the big number of dropouts who may
lapse into illiteracy again if the
government will not give them immediate
attention.
EDITORIAL OF ARGUMENTATION

This type is designed to argue for the

readers. The purpose of which is to sway
the readers to the opinion that the
newspaper holds.
EXAMPLES OF EDITORIAL OF
ARGUMENTATION
Argue for your fellow students/ pupils that they
should not give in to vices like smoking or
drinking liquors because of peer pressure.
Argue for them that they should not fall prey to
drug pushers.
Argue for them that they have the right to
cafeteria or library service.
Argue for the students/ pupils that they have
the right to quality education and that the
government has to improve its deteriorating
educational system.
EDITORIAL OF INTERPRETATION

This explains the significance of an

event, current idea, condition or situation.
The writer doesnt criticize but merely
presents both sides of the issue.
EXAMPLE OF EDITORIAL OF
INTERPRETATION
The horror of population explosion. How
many people does the country have today? 80M
or 90M.
At the present growth rate, this small country
would have to support more than 100M Filipinos
in 35 years if the government does not do
something to minimize the present growth rate.
This means that most of our students/ pupils
who would only be in their 50s will be the ones
to be most affected by the evil effects of
population explosion.
EDITORIAL OF CRITICISM

This is primarily designed to urge the

readers on certain issues. It also presents
both sides of the issue even if the
newspapers is obviously espousing a
definite stand.
EXAMPLES OF EDITORIAL OF
CRITICISM

Significant observations during the flag

ceremony- be it flag raising or flag retreat.
The ceremony is sacred, therefore, it
should be observed with all solemnity and
reverence.
EDITORIAL OF APPRECIATION

This type offers an analytical judgment

on the affairs of the students, school,
community or country. This usually makes
worthy commendation and praise for the
achievements and successes of students,
teachers, school personnel, community
leaders, parents or organization.
EXAMPLE OF EDITORIAL OF
APPRECIATION

Generous donors, model student,

teacher, janitor, guard, etc
EDITORIAL OF
ENTERTAINMENT

This light type of editorial reflects the

human interest angle with the view to
create a certain smile on the part of the
readers. Topics of this may include fads
and fashion, signing of yearbooks or
slumbooks, students or teachers behavior
and sacrifices of athletes during the
training.
POOLED EDITORIAL

This type is written by a group of

editors from different publications and
published simultaneously in their
respective newspapers to indicate a
common stand on a pressing problem or
issue.

example:
Implementation of Zero Collection of Schools
A. Organize the editorial into four parts
TITLE - has to be catchy,
thought-provoking
Examples:
Kotong on the streets
And the winner is . . . China
In the noodle house
Erroneous textbooks: A
bitter pill to our ailing
education
INTRODUCTION- states the
issue, problem or proposition plus the
stand or the reaction.

The expose made by Dr. Antonio

Calipjo-Go, academic supervisor in a
private Marian School in Quezon City,
that some of the textbooks used by
students are erroneous, created gigantic
tremor that rocks our academe.
BODY - contains the explanation,
elaboration, support or justification to the
stand.
In Asya Ngayon at sa Hinaharap, a 316-
page textbook used by the second year
high school students in Araling
Panlipunan, Dr. Go has discovered 431
errors.
As expected, those in the godly seats of
our government vehemently denied the
findings of Dr. Go. Even the authors of
the said book threatened to file a case
against the professor, whose only
mistake is his undying concern of
saving our educational system from
dooming by bravely coming out and
exposed the tip of the iceberg of
errors in these widely used textbooks.
After thorough evaluation, however,
the Department of Education has
found out that indeed, Dr. Go is right.
Several textbooks not only in the
public schools, but also in the private
schools are indeed erroneous.
Nobody can deny that textbooks are holy
bibles of the students. Majority of those in
the public schools are dependent on the
facts and figures given by these books. If
they are fed with erroneous information,
these will be implanted into their minds
forever. The same will be handed down to
others unless by chance they come across
the right information along the way toward
their higher educational pursuit. That will
invalidate and correct whatever erroneous
information that they have learned from
the past.

These textbooks stained with errors

are but bitter pills that entangle our youth
in the sty of ignorance. These negate the
objective of the government of providing
quality education among our students.
Conclusion/Ending/C
lincher

This part is optional if the editorial body

is well-written. But as an editorial ending,
it usually summarizes, affirms or
restates the stand, and in some cases, it
presents a solution , gives suggestions
or even invites the readers to do
something about a given situation.
EXAMPLE

The authors, as well as the concerned

authorities, who are tasked to evaluate
these books are guilty of thwarting facts
and injecting the wrong medication into
the minds of the students. They should be
given the dose of their own medicine.
B. Win the readers interest by an impelling
lead paragraph. Almost all leads used
for news or feature stories may be used
for editorials. The exact lead depends
upon the purpose of the editorial.
C. Avoid generalities, instead use plenty of
facts and explain what these facts mean.
Usually, it is best to state briefly the
situation that stimulates the editorial.
D. Keep the editorial short, 250-300 words
only.
E. Document statements by quoting
sources and authorities.
Know the issue very well.
Be sure that the topic is of interest to
the reader. Prefer current and
controversial issue.
Have a purpose well in mind.
Gather sufficient data and attribute
sources.
Be authoritative, but do not preach.
Be impersonal. Use the third person
We instead of I.
Relate the editorial directly to the lives
of the readers.
Support your stand with appropriate
data and statistics.
Follow the principles of effective
writing to achieve coherence & unity.
Write simple, catchy & thought-
provoking title.
Never place a byline.
Write simply, use familiar words.
