WHY are WE Here??

World Environment Day is celebrated globally each year to raise

AWARENESS and generate political MOMENTUM around growing
concerns such as the depletion of the ozone layer, toxic chemicals,
desertification and global warming.

The Day has developed into a GLOBAL PLATFORM for taking action on
urgent environmental issues. Millions of people have taken part over
the years, helping drive change in our consumption habits, as well as in
national and international environmental policy.
World Environment Day 2017
The THEME for World Environment Day 2017 is
"Connecting People to Nature.

It implores us to get outdoors and into nature, to APPRECIATE its beauty

and its importance

To take forward the call to PROTECT the Earth that we share.

To think about how we are part of nature and how intimately we DEPEND
on it.

This theme was chosen to stress the fact that we need

harmony between nature and humanity for both to strive.
The Value of Nature
Our natural systems support our own prosperity and well-being. The trees, the
oceans, the flora and fauna surrounding us play a vital role in maintaining the
balance and quality of life.
Economists have developed a measure of the multi-trillion-dollar worth of
many so-called Ecosystem Services, from insects pollinating fruit trees in the
orchards of California to the leisure, health and spiritual benefits of a hike up
a Himalayan valley.
PERILS to the ENVIRONMENT

Global CLIMATE CHANGE is the one of the

largest perils to the environment and is a
consequence of increased green house gas
emissions and industrial activity.

It has already had observable effects primarily

the melting of glaciers &ice on rivers and lakes
due rise in global temperatures, loss of natural
habitats resulting in human suffering and loss
in prosperity.
Environmental pollution has become a serious problem in recent
times. Burning of fossil fuels, use of chemicals, non biodegradable
materials like plastic and loss of natural habitats have all led to
increase in pollution of the environment.
PLAY YOUR ROLE for a GREENER TOMORROW
Follow the principle of the three Rs to conserve natural resources & landfill space.
REDUCE, REUSE AND RECYCLE.

CONSERVE WATER to reduce wastewater that eventually ends up in the oceans thus
polluting them.

Remember to TURN OFF THE LIGHTS to reduce energy consumption thus reducing
green house gas emissions primarily CO2.

Use NON-TOXIC CHEMICALS at home and in the office to reduce release of toxins in
our water resources.

REDUCE PLASTIC use by using canvas recyclable bags instead. Less plastic means
lesser oil and gas extractions and also landfill space saved which would have been
otherwise occupied by plastic waste.

PLANT a tree or PICK up stray trash! Every small step goes a long way!
CONNECT with NATURE
Time spent in green spaces reduces stress and
combats depression.

It enhances the immune system including against

cancer.

It mitigates air pollution, the worlds single

largest environmental threat

The use of local and exotic flora in traditional

medicine is a practice that dates back centuries.

Common drugs and anti malarial treatments as

well as drugs to fight cancer, heart conditions
and high blood pressure are derived from plants.
