KHAMIR
BACKGROUND
In 1998, Kutch faced cyclone and in
2001, an earthquake. Because of this
about 28-30 NGO’s were set up.

These NGO’s with the Govt. Of Gujarat


made Kutch Vikas Sangathan for art
and craft and its sustainability.

KHAMIR was born, in 2005; out of a


collaboration between the Nehru
foundation for development and
Kutch Nav Nirman Abhiyan.
Today, it serves as a platform for the
promotion of traditional handicrafts and
allied cultural practices, the processes
involved in their creation, and the
preservation of culture and community.

Word khamir meaning self esteem, is a


platform for crafts, heritage and
cultural ecology of kutch region of
Gujarat.
CRAFTS PRACTICED IN KUTCH:
• Block printing
• Weaving
• Kala cotton
• Knife work, weaving, lacquered wood
• Leather arts
• Metal bells assembling
• Pottery
• Recycled plastic weaving

Here, the artisans majorly come from the following villages:


Bhujodi(5km),Ajrakhpur(1.5km), Lodai(20km),
Avadh nagar, Bhuj(15km),
Zura(25km).

ACTIVITIES AT KHAMIR

•Khamir is a production and selling centre. People


from villages as far as 25km come to work there.

•Crafts of khamir includes 5 major studios:


• Recycled plastic, Weaving, Copper, Leather and
Pottery.

•On an average 5 artisans work in each studio on a


daily basis from 10am to 5pm.

•The raw materials come from Ahmedabad,


Mehsana, Gandhinagar, Muradabad, Mumbai, and
Bhuj.

•Products are supplied to Chennai, Bangalore,


Hyderabad, Kolkata, Durgapur, Jaipur, Surat,
Ahmedabad, Baroda and Delhi.

•Exhibition takes place once a year in the month of


January or February and it goes on for about a
month.

•Workshops are conducted on special requests for a


group of minimum 10 students on a singular type of
art. The tutors that they invite are the skilled
artisans from the nearby village within 100kms.

•At present, the State government takes care
