Fixed Partial Denture Impressions

Impression

It is a negative reproduction of the prepared

teeth or implants, adjacent teeth and
surrounding soft tissues that provides the
information required for fabrication of crown of
the fixed prosthesis.
How impression are made.
Ideal requirements of a good impression

Record all the prepared tooth surfaces and some of the unprepared tooth cervical to
the finish line

It records detail and maintains its dimensional stability.

Impression materials.

Aqueous impression materials

Irreversible hydrocolloid (Alginate)
Reversible hydrocolloid (Agar)

Non aqueous elastomers

polysulfide
polyether
condensation silicone
Addition silicone

Reversible hydrocolloid (Agar)

Undergoes distortion by syneresis and imbibition.

Detail reproduction is not excellent.

Not well suited for fixed prosthodontics.

Types of impression trays

Stock trays
1, Plastic
2, Metal

Custom trays
1, Autopolymerizing resin
2, Light - polymerised resin
Advantages of Custom Trays
Made to fit the arch needed for some patients

Carries and confines the material to certain difficult areas
Uses less impression material
Diagnostic cast

Spacer wax adaptation

Custom tray fabrication

Gingival tissue Retraction

Conventional displacement systems

Retraction cords
chemical reagents
Electrosurgery
Laser tissue sculpting

Cordless displacement systems.
