Relationship between the Number
of Moles of a Gas and Its Volume

NUMBER O MOLAR MASS

F MOLES

GASES VOLUME
Relationship of mole with the
volume of gas

Molar volume = volume of 1 mole of

any gas at the STP

It mean,
1 mole any gas have the same number of
particle = 6.02 x 1023

NUMBER
MOLAR VOLUME

DEFINITION

- 1 Mole of any gas volume at the S.T.P

(Standard Temperature and Pressure)
- Its mean, 1 mole any gas at s.t.p equal
to 6.02 x 1023 particles

Standard temperature is 0oC

Standard pressure at 1 atm

(atm = atmosphere)
Volume gas at the:
S.T.P

22.4 dm3

Room temperature

24 dm3
For example:

Volume of 1 mole nitrogen gas at

STP is 22.4dm3.

Volume of 1 mole nitrogen gas at

room temperature is 24dm3.
AVOGADRO LAW
ANY GASES WITH THE SAME
VOLUME AT THE SAME PRESSURE
AND TEMPERATURE HAVE THE
SAME NUMBER OF MOLE
MOLECULE

1 MOLE GAS = 6.02 X 1023 particles

RELATIONSHIP BETWEEN
GASES VOLUME WITH NUMBER OF
MOLES

VOLUME
= NUMBER OF MOLE GAS X 22.4 dm3
AT STP

VOLUME AT
= NUMBER OF MOLE GAS X 24 dm3
ROOM TEMPERATURE
NUMBER OF VOLUME AT S.T.P
=
MOLE GAS 22.4 dm3

NUMBER OF VOLUME AT ROOM TEMPERATURE

=
MOLE GAS 24 dm3
EXAMPLE
1) Calculate the volume of chlorine gas at
STP for 0.25 mole chlorine gas.
[1 mole of gases replace 22.4 dm 3 at
STP]
Step
Volume = number of mole x 22.4 dm3
Answer:
Volume of chlorine gas
= 0.25 x 22.4 dm3
= 5.6 dm3
2. Determine the volume of oxygen gas at
room temperature that contain 7.2 x 1021
molecule?
[ Avogadro constant = 6.02 x 1023 , 1 mole of
gas replace 24 dm3 at room temperature]

Step 1
Find the number of mole
Answer: O2
Number of mole, O2 = 7.2 x 1021
6.02 x 1023
= 0.012 mol Step 2
Multiply number of
mole with 24 dm3
Volume of O2 = 0.012 x 24
= 0.288 dm3
Question 1

Calculate the number of mole

molecule and the number of
molecule that contain in 4.8 dm3
ammonia gas, NH3 at lab pressure
and temperature.
Question 2

Calculate mass and volume of gas

at standard pressure temperature
(s.t.p) that contain 9 x 1023
molecule oxygen. [RAM: O=16]
Question 3

Calculate mass and number of

molecule that contain in 1.2 dm3
carbon dioxide gas at room
temperature. [RAM: C = 12, O =
16]
Question 4

Calculate the number of mole that

contain in 33.6 dm3 hydrogen
chloride gas, HCl, at standard
pressure temperature (s.t.p) and
the mass of HCl gas. [RAM;H=1,
Cl=35.5]
