PEOPLE, FIRE AND FORESTS
-FIRE, particularly the wood fire, has
been intimately associated with mankind
from the beginnings of civilization.
-Fire has continued to play an intimate
role in all cultures.
-Systematic control and use of fire is no
longer new in professional forestry
-Fire as a field of professional interest
concerns the physical and biological sciences
and the social sciences as well.
-In spite of the fact that systematic control
and use of fire is no longer new in
professional forestry, FFCM in the Philippines
today can be described as__.
PREVENTION OF MAN-CAUSED FIRES
A fire prevented does not have to be suppressed and does no damage.
If all fires are prevented, the whole objective of fire control activities
is accomplished too.

FIRE DAMAGE
Every year during dry months, natural and plantation forests are damaged by forest
fires. Records of the Forest Management Bureau for the past ten years (1) showed that
extent of destruction from 1991 to 2000 as follows:

YEAR AREA DAMAGED (Ha.)

1991 5,872.00
1992 51,310.00
1993 15,330.00
1994 7,720.77
1995 10,710.00
1996 5,463.42
1997 3,561.43
1998 52,681.20
1999 3,642.16
2000 7,084.10
FOREST FIRE DAMAGES

1. Soil burned
2. b. Essential nutrient
a. Organic matter is s for plant growth
are lost
c. Fertility is lowered hence, lower
crop production
d. Erosion is encouraged
2. Trees/Timber

a. Trees will naturally die/loss of

timber products in the forest.
b. Investments used in the production,
development and maintenance of
the forest went to ashes.
c. Wood price rises
3. Range
a. Forage is burned
b. It encourages the growth of weeds
and non-palatable plants.

4. Watershed
a. Soil-water holding capacity is
lessened.
b. Siltation and sedimentation of
dams are accelerated.
c. Biodiversity is destroyed.
d. Climate Change
WHAT IS GOVERNMENT DOING ABOUT IT
- Public education and information campaigns
- Fielding out of forest protection officers in
fire prone area
- Deployment of Forest Fire Fighting Personnel
- Establishment of fire breaks and other forest
fire limiting contraptions like fire lines and
green breaks
- Use of fire resistant trees for reforestation
- Application of controlled burning
